The Great Experiment...

Atolm

Commodore
Commodore
This is the culmination of a design that was just an idea that was tossed back and forth between a colleague of mine who goes by the handle "Starship" and myself.
the Helix-Class is literally the direct development of the older Pisces-Class I did a while ago... Hope you like her ;)

That's a really, really interesting design you've got there. Very 25th-century looking. Moreso than many of the designs that have come out of the franchise. That cleaned-up side view is particularly good. Will we be seeing the other views in that style?

This design is so very awesome and im eagerly waiting for new pics and views :) :techman:

Like I said earlier, Atolm... very awesome... and I see you used the Excelsior reference in the thread title. :D

The final drawing looks very like something you'd see in the old 2000AD comic. It has the same odd shapes and detailed style of illustration that was used to great effect in their strips. You're clearly quite talented.

Having said that, to me it's a mis-shapen oddity of a design and looks unbalanced and a little ungainly. I am loving many of the design cues and details though, particularly areas of the nacelle and neck design, as well as parts of the saucer and lower hull. With a single saucer section and the over/under bussards altered to be different sizes it would have been exciting, but the current layout is a little too challenging for me.

My first impression when I saw it was: move the nacelles to the "saucer", change them up a little, and this looks like a post 24th century Cardassian ship. Maybe at a time when they joined the Federation and as their technologies blend, so do their design concepts...

Aye, it seemed to fit.

very curious work. I look forward to following it with enthusiasm.
Thanks

Sometimes, my designs are a bit too "out-there", but at least it helps define what you like, and dislike, so its fun regardless :)

I think i can visualize what you are writing, maybe we should explore those suggestions more, and do a collaborative effort for another design perhaps?

I could buy the top and front views as having the typical Trek style but that profile looks very "Giger" to me.

I disagree with almost everyone. To me this screams Romulan influence...it really looks like the TNG Warbird (which had odd geometry, itself) crossed with a Galaxy. Perhaps this is a post-destruction-of-Romulus collaboration between Romulan survivors and Federation engineers?

Ignore the naysayers...keep going with what you've got, finish it, and only then start to edit and revise the concept.

It kind of reminds me of the original Battlestar Galactica base ships with a Federation/Starfleet stardrive attached. Definitely a unique design.

I keep coming back here, intrigued by this design, it's growing on me. Atolm, would you mind if I did a little manip to this?

I dont think there are any naysayers, Belisarius, we're all agreed it's superb work but not everyone thinks the overall design is beautiful. I absolutely love many of the elements on it, but the whole is not something I like. I will certainly be stealing and altering some of the elements I've seen in this design for my own twisted creations!

I'm just encouraging him to do his own thang before he implements suggestions. Then he always has a purely original fallback position. And the dorsal view is sweet. You clearly have a gift for this kind of art, Atolm. It's very professional-looking. Keep up the good work.
