'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' aka 'Men who Hate Women'

That'd depend upon what the film was and other *gasp* contextual factors. American sensibilities are all wrong for this sort of thing.

Considering that America made a ton of film noir movies, I find that hard to believe.

^That was a long time ago.

Unfortunately. :(

An American remake wouldn't necessarily be terrible, or even inferior. I thought the remake of Insomnia, for example, was very good.

But that movie had the benefit of being directed by Christopher Nolan. It also had great performances from the two leads. In fact, I thought it was Al Pacino's best performance in years.

So, a lot will depend on the director and actors. Keep your fingers crossed.

EDIT: I saw the Swedish film just recently, and I thought it was terrific. Looking forward to seeing more.

Fincher is the perfect director for the film off the back of Se7en and Zodiac. The question is whether the studio'll let him do it properly.

If he's worried about that, then maybe it should be done independently, with distribution by one of the boutique divisions of the major studios (Paramount Vantage, Fox Searchlight. Sony Pictures Classics, Fine Line Features, etc.) That's assuming a major studio division doesn't have the rights already, in which case all of us will have to just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

At my Mother-in-law's suggestion... I've read all three books (it helps that she gave me copies too).

Anyway, I found the first book to be a compelling crime mystery. I liked Blomkvist, but I was quite smitten with Salander. So, I was excited to start the second book. Unfortunately, the first 150 pages seemed like a harlequin romance to me. Then, the "action novel" actually picked up. So, I was once again excited for the next book. The first 200 pages should have been titled "The Girl Who Kicked the Swedish Rolodex," for it was essentially 200 pages of setting the additions to the cast. I found the last 300 pages to be satisfying. Dragon Tattoo is by far the best book in the trilogy.

As for the movies, I am looking forward to seeing the Men Who Hate Women adaptation, although the title is lame. Daniel Craig is indeed at the top of the rumor list to play Blomkvist in the US version. I've heard rumors that Juno's Ellen Page is being recruited to play Salander. Craig works for me. So does Page.

Noooo, 'Men who Hate Women' is a translation of the Swedish title for both the book and the film. Both are known as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in English-speaking markets. And I agree: the change is an improvement.

Well that would be... different.

Thank you.

And seriously, I had NEVER heard if this Rush band until I saw that film. And I don't like under a rock in Moldavia or ina cave in Upper Uzbekistan. NEVER. HEARD. OF. THEM.

I am STILL not convinced they are not a Spinal Tap type thing and not real.

Ok.. First off, I DON'T believe you.. ;) (just kidding)

Second.. Please see the Rush Documentary and Rush Tour 2010 threads, also located in the tv & media forum.

Also, please see http://www.rush.com

And prepare to enjoy!

I am serious.

In the past few years I have come across two people who were raised in different remote rural parts of Australia. As a consequence they have these bizarre but fascinating gaps in their cultural knowledge. One knew NOTHING of "Gilligan's Island"(and it's not like she was young, she is 45). The other had to have "The Love Boat" explained to them.

I find these people FASCINATING because whole swaths of my childhood are completely unknown to them.

This must be how they felt when I heard about this "Rush" band. I had NEVER, EVER heard of them amd it's not like I was raised in the desert or anything! I am sure they are just some kind of cult band that people are trying to "big up" now.

I really like Scandinavian crime fiction. So far I have read Arnaldur Indridasson (Icelandic), Karin Fossum (Norwegian) and Jo Nesbo (Noewegian). Stieg Larrson novels have been suggested to me and I do plan to read all three of them.

I am not sure whether I should go to the movie which is still playing at the cinema here (but not for much longer). If I see the movie first will it spoil the book too much?

I think it is regrettable that the royalties on the books are going to his estranged father and brother and not to his long term partner. Stieg couldn't marry his partner because he would have had to make their address public (under Swedish law) and he had received death threats from extremist groups.

I've got news for you (a long running UK TV current affairs comedy). Nobody in the UK has a clue what Gilligan's Island is. Very few have heard of Rush either. Now we're talking about the centre of culture on the planet. ;)

WTF?

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has now been released on DVD, but only seems to be available in Canada as a DVD/Blu-Ray combo.

Fuck that. The US version has a better cover, anyway.

Heh.

I can get the UK Blu-Ray version for the same price as the Oceanic DVD version. But the Oceanic versions have better cover art. I'm still deciding.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl Who Played With Fire
The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest

The Girl with the Pearl Earring is another unrelated film (although, wow, look at that name).

For added confusion there's also The Girl who Leapt through Time.

Has The Girl Who Played With Fire just been released in North America? I read a review in my local newspaper this morning, though it isn't playing at any local theatre.

In the UK, there seemed to be a few weeks difference between date of release and it appearing at our local cinema. I'm not sure how many cinemas it made it to over here either.
