The German Lounge

I love the awesome story of how a city here in Germany wanted to find a name for a new tunnel and people voted for Bud Spencer Tunnel and the city said "nah we can't do that" so, in order to avoid outrage they named the swimming pool after Bud Spencer (since he had been swimming there when he was young) and Bud Spencer himself actually came to the city when they christened the swimming pool... ah, it was all so wholesome!

Story

Fine thing. Pools are usually named after big financial sponsors.

Yeah the city was pretty desperate, they had maneuvered themselves into this corner by asking the internet to name the tunnel (baaaaaaaaaaad idea, asking the internet to name something). OF COURSE someone was going to bring in Bud Spencer since he did have a connection to the city (swimming in the pool), which was pretty much the only requirement the city had named for suggestions to be taken seriously. Everyone voted for Bud Spencer Tunnel and the city was like "omg what are we going to do, we can't name our precious tunnel after an actor!"... so... someone clever thought of this solution - just name the pool after him, problem solved. I really love that they actually invited him to the christening and that he actually showed up.

BBS Insider Joke:

I'm waiting for the day when there is finally....

.....a Brian Brophy Street.

Maybe, if he has German ancestry and the city they're from decides to have a "name this street" contest... then... maybe... some day...

^^
They were and always will be my heroes, also because they were/are great guys for real as well, Buddy is much missed, I hope Terrence is fine, seems he still acts. :mallory:
He actually opened an ice cream parlor right here in Dresden last year, and shortly before Christmas came for a very quick visit. Here's a picture: https://tinyurl.com/uqxrfo4

The reason, in case you don't know, he spent part of his childhood in a small village called Lommatzsch nearby Dresden, which is why he also still speaks German so well. They also recently opened a museum in his name.

I've already tasted the original Hill ice cream and as in the video, I opted for pistachio. At first I thought they had gotten me the wrong kind, as it looked more like caramel, but then I was informed that real pistachio looks like this and the green is only added color. Which makes sense if you look how pistachios look inside.

I have to confess I haven't watched any of these movies lately. I have fond memories of them from my childhood as well but here's the thing - we used to have our own East German DEFA dubbing for these, as well as the French Lois deFunes movies, the British "Carry On" series with Sidney James and the very famous Italian movie with Ornella Muti and Adriano Celentano "Der gezähmte Widerspenstige".

And if you know them by heart, and wait for certain lines, now they never come, because now they air the other dubbing in TV.

Another fun story, from a Stargate convention years ago: Actor Peter Williams, who grew up in Jamaica, was asked about his favorite movies and he replied, oh I don't think you will know these here, they are rather obscure and then was surprised about the loud cheer he got when naming Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. He was so happy someone knew them! He had no idea they were that big over here.

Yeah the Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movies are like David Hasselhoff... super popular here (although The Hoff's popularity is probably more of a myth, at least nowadays, haha) and no one understands exactly why.

Terence Hill is rather active still, shooting a soap about a national park ranger in the Austrian Alps. It's on Bavarian TV every Friday (I believe). Picture a cross-breed between Father Brown, Lucky Luke and Nobody and sprinkle with lost blonde children, dangerous bears and nature-poisoning industrial bosses.
Frankly, I could never understand what people find so fascinating about that sort of entertainment. But in an era where people turn right at the summit of a bridge because their satnav tells them to, it's propably hopeless to wish for a TV series for people with an IQ higher than their respective age in years.

Yeah, not watching that one either. My love for certain actors has its limits ;)

I posted something about Hasselhoff and the German Wall elsewhere here in the darkest corners of the board. Somebody even has a Hasselhoff avatar.

Hasselhoff avatars are not popular anymore these days, since Brian Brophy took over the dominance and reign in several threads....

I kinda love the whole myth of "Hasselhoff brought the Berlin Wall down"... I never even know what to say about it

Meinen Sie, wer Deutsch spricht? Ja, ich lebe noch. Meine Familie hat keine Krankheit. Mein Sohn hat Langweile, und meine Frau muss noch nach ihre Arbeit fahren.

My travelplans this year have vanished into thin air. Two days a week homeoffice and keeping contact with clients who don't have computers......

My home village is under a complete lockdown/curfew because people didn't follow instructions and walked around in groups and kids played in the streets as usual, happy that the schools are closed, like as if nothing had happened and they were on vacation. So, because of irresponsible people, we are now ALL forced to stay inside unless we have a REALLY good reason to go outside. (And this IS being enforced, I've seen more police cars in this little village in the past two days than I've seen in the past two YEARS.) :shifty:

I expect the rest of the country will follow suit soonish... Merkel will address us at 4.30 pm or so.

I'm even more grateful for my dog right now... I mean, I hope she will still count as a reason to leave my small apartment a couple of times a day! (I hear in some places people rent out their dogs so others can take a walk, heh!)
