News The Future of the Fan Art Forum Challenge

And I must admit, without the Trek Art Challenge, I just haven't had the impetus to do anything creative, so I'm glad that it looks like it might be coming back. (Other than a couple of sketches, my last proper art was for last year's Hallowe'en challenge!)
I feel you man! I've been doodling away with my virtual lego designs more than my Trek designs, mainly because I've had a lack of creativity. The contest was ideal for that...

Let the contest be decided by a vote of the board, and let the prize be for the next month to render the winner’s name in gold letters and change his rank to the contest he won, ie “Art Contest Winner, Dec 2022”
You know, that's actually a pretty cool idea! I don't know how complicated it would be to implement, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask: @EricF, do you think something like that can be done without too much hoopla and extra work for you?

If the editorial mods/admins ie Bonz et. al. would like me to I'm happy to figure out something along those lines.

Hey.
I have not contributed anything for a while, but I really really dont want to see the Art challenge die. Here some thoughts:

  • the more time I have, the more likely it is that I can be bothered to even start. A month sounds reasonable to me.
  • to choose the next challenge felt like kind of a burden. Seriously....I did not like that at all. But for the unlikely case I'll have to make a decision again...I will just pick some random stuff from the suggestion thread or open a poll to avoid any responsebility.
  • I find the "picture consequence" Idea sounds really fun and I am all for it to run paralell to the art challenge.
  • For the sake of having more entrys maybe we could get rid of the "it has to be made in the month of the challenge" rule. I mean....there is no way to control this anyway and having only like three entrys was the saddest thing and very discouraging.
However the future of the art challenge looks like....I'm in again. Even if my PC dies...I will make scribbles with my clumsy claws and post them. But I really want to help save this.

Also: Isnt Trek going through kind of a rainnecance right now? Where is the new generation of trekkies? How can we make them find this? Its hard to believe that there are only like five people willing to participate.

(sorry for my english. I am really tired right now and to google how to spell every word would have taken ages.)

Just start a new contest already! We could all be dead in another 6 months, don't procrastinate, do it now!

@Orac, makes a good point. ;)

With August just a few days away, might I suggest a compromise timetable to get the challenge jump-started?

- Just this once, have @Michael, as the last winner, choose August's Challenge.
- Collect subject suggestions for September's Challenge for the next two weeks.
- Vote on the suggestions during the second half of of August.
- August's Challenge winner hosts September's Challenge using the subject chosen by the vote.
- Use the same approach for choosing October's subject...

How's that?

P.S. @Michael, if you're busy with RL, I'd be happy to take the lead getting the challenge rolling again if that would be helpful. :bolian:

Inspired by Starscape's Quick-Fire idea, what about an 'exquisite corpse'/picture consequences style game running alongside the main challenge? Say, for example, the first theme is 'Starfleet starship' - someone would draw a bridge, the next a primary hull, the following person would draw a secondary hull, then nacelle pylons, then the last person would draw nacelles. Then someone with a working knowledge of Photoshop (or similar) - i.e. not me, although I could possibly fumble something together in Paint - could put all the parts together and post the finished ship? The theme could run for a month so there'd be a fleet of mismatched starships at the end of it. Then the next month could be 'alien' or 'uniform' or something.
I'm imagining quick sketches for each stage in the game rather than detailed masterworks, something that doesn't take any longer than 5 or 10 mins to do - just something fun! :D

I would suggest a, err, ‘Drinking Game Variant’, where each artwork post is used to spin a story. After some number of entries (say 10 or 12), try to bring it to some sort of conclusion (if possible). Hilarity of some sort might happen…

Cheers,
-CM-
