The Frasier thread

One of the things about the show I grew to love recently is what a drama queen Frasier can be. I love how he turns almost everything into a PERFORMANCE. He's insanely overdramatic.

Few examples:

I absolutely LOVE the "shame on youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu."

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is when Frasier and Niles buy the restaurant and end up insulting and/or scaring off every employee. The whole scene with Niles trying to prepare the eel is priceless.

I love the episode where Frasier tries to write his own theme song (They're Playing Our Song). His grandiosity is at it's zenith.

The actual song starts at about 5:26.

Did anyone mention this gem yet?

"You think maybe him and Daphne...... ?"

The Doctor Is Out was a great episode.

I mean, c'mon. Patrick Stewart does gay? Classic!

In a season 7 episode titled Morning Becomes Entertainment, one of the B plots was about Martin needing glasses because he was losing his sight. When he caves in and gets a pair of glasses, he doesn't realize that he's actually wearing a pair of lady's glasses. He likes them so much, but no one will actually tell him that are for women and not men. Later on, Martin is looking for the case to his glasses and he asks Daphne where he could find it. She tells him she put it in her purse, so he goes to look for them.

Meanwhile, Frasier and Niles begin to bicker about Frasier's controlling agent, Bibi. Niles feels that she's too manipulative and Frasier doesn't see it.

Niles: I'm just wasting my breath. As usual, you have fallen under the spell of that sorceress out there.
Frasier: Oh, I have done no such thing, I wish you would just lay off of Bibi; she's not some maligned witch who can transform people at will!

Just then, Martin walks out still wearing his lady's glasses with Daphne's purse around his arm.

Martin: I can't find a damn thing in this purse!

After a brief pause with Frasier and Niles giving Martin very strange looks, Niles turns to Frasier.

Niles: If I say I'm sorry, will she change dad back into a man?

I said it before, but no sitcom has ever made me laugh harder than Frasier has. For me, it's the number one best sitcom ever created.
I've long thought of Frasier as the closest thing to an American Britcom.

As I said, I think a few come close (Curb Your Enthusiasm and Becker come to mind), but none have been able to deliver the wit and sophistication that Frasier has.
Arrested Development, even though it's completely different, hit a lot of same buttons that Frasier hit for me.

You know, I hear that a lot concerning the show. What is it that makes it so close to a British comedy?
It's clever. It doesn't go just for cheap obvious laughs and bathroom humour. The writing and acting is excellent. And the producers and writers were smart in having an excellent ensemble cast rather than relying solely on the main character to carry the show.

Frasier doesn't play the audience for dummies. It expects the audience to be smart and to keep up. And it's not afraid to go for outright farce.

I guess it's more of a "feel" than something quantifiable. Frasier, despite its quantity of episodes (which vastly outweigh any Britcom), hits the Britcom marks for me.

And in all this, let's not forget Black Frasier...

Both Kelsey & David are both so good at acting without speaking. They can convey so much with just a look.

Most shows don't get two such great actors.
