the FIVE

Alright you scifi five buffs...I have been debating this with a friend of mine and now it comes to this...the BBS board...

If someone came to you and asked "What five SCIFI movie should in everyone's collection" which five, above all others, would you chose. These FIVE movies are so important that NO scifi collection would be worthy of note with out them...

Aliens and Terminator 2 are must-haves. I'll leave the remaining 3 spots for the next poster.

"Alien"
"The Day the Earth Stood Still"
"Blade Runner"
"Star Wars"
"The Matrix"

5 is just not enough. You'd also need, "Close Encounters", "Planet of the Apes", "Jurassic Park", ST Ep. IV, "War of the Worlds", "ET", "The Terminator", among many, many more.

Oh I agree...10 would make a great list too, but five makes it harder to do; and to agree upon.

The distinction should be made between watching and owning. I've watched Blade Runner and War of the Worlds, but I don't wish to own them. Is my sci-fi collection therefore unworthy to some people? I don't think people will look at my DVD/Blu-ray shelves and think, "Smiley doesn't like sci-fi."

This is purely a 'opinion' based thread. And I agree that the best scifi movies may not be my favorite scifi movies...if that makes any sense...

No, no. Your collection is only incomplete if it lacks Babylon 5. :bolian:

Blade Runner (The Final Cut)
Planet of the Apes
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
THX 1138
2001: A Space Odyssey

My five, which are of course entirely subjective (and I don't think any collection without one, more or all of these films would be "unworthy", so whatever).

Forbidden Planet
The Time Machine (1961)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
The Incredible Shrinking Man
Godzilla (1954)

Blade Runner (The Final Cut)
Planet of the Apes
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
THX 1138
2001: A Space Odyssey

yes...I like that list...good one!!!

I really like your pick of ENTERNAL SUNSHINE....I think that movie gets little respect. I might even add 12 Monkeys as well....

Rob

Here's my attempt at five sci-fi movies that every sci-fi fan should see:

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Terminator
The Matrix

Of course, five is very limiting, but I think these five give a nice overview of why I love the genre.

Super tough one man! The 5 best Sci-Fi movies? I'd say that is impossible to list. I have a list with good Sci-Fi movies on it, but I don't think it is the best possible ones, but anyway....

K-PAX--Great Sci-Fi story with a great actor, actually two great actors with Spacey and Bridges. It is just a great pure story, no flashing light or bells and whistles, jsut a great story and a judgement call at the end. I always recommend this movie

Contact--Another great story. This has a large religious undertone and the really cool science comes at the end, but it is a great story nonetheless.

12 Monkeys--Great movie and great time travel. This movie is infinately re-watchable.

Fifth Element--Just a fun movie. Not many people like it, but it features alot Science Fiction in it, with many different (but logical) alien races described, space ships and space technology.

Star Trek First Contact--Have to throw in a ST movie. I have always liked TNG the best, so this would be my choice.

Fun topic! I can't wait to hear other peoples suggestions as I know I must've missed some key Sci-Fi movies...

Thanks. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my favorite romantic film. I almost included 12 Monkeys (which is my favorite Terry Gilliam film), but which film from that list do I not include? Pretty tough choice.

Wow..I CANT believe I left off CONTACT. I just watched it two days ago, Bluray. I think Jodie Foster gives the best performance by a woman EVER in scifi history with that movie. Yes, even better than Ms. ALIENS her self....

I have to rethink!!!

Rob

After a bit thinking, I'm actually going to revise my list a bit:

Blade Runner (The Final Cut)
Planet of the Apes
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
12 Monkeys
A Clockwork Orange

Based on what I personally like rather than any objective ranking system:

Star Wars
Predator
The Matrix
Back to the Future
Aliens

Honorable Mentions: Silent Running, Total Recall, Blade Runner, Terminator, T2, Alien, ST: First Contact, etc, etc.
