The First Trailer

I don't get the "nervous" thing either. I get excited of course, but I've been disappointed with films plenty, but never really bothered by it. Both TFA and SPECTRE were huge disappointments for me, but neither affected my life in any way. And I'm sure both with become a part of my Star Wars/Bond viewing repertoire, moving forward.

I'm excited for sever 2016 films and I have no doubt at least one will disappoint. But that doesn't mean I'm ever going to lose a minute of sleep over them.

Everybody's different, but I can explain my own reasons:

I'm an introvert. Yeah, it doesn't seem that way here, but all of you are in my head (so to speak), and I've come to know most of you very well. I can control my part of the conversational flow.

When I share something with you, however, I am taking a piece of my personality, in this case my wants and likes, and I'm putting it out on display. When it is rejected, I feel rejected, even though the rejection isn't usually personal. So I get nervous when I've attached some level of importance to something I've shared.

As silly as it sounds, "this is stupid," becomes "you are stupid." That can cause people to be nervous.

Oh, you mean the kind of folks who wait to see what everyone on the Internet thinks of a movie before buying a ticket.

Yeah, I don't get that.

Well, maybe not "everyone on the internet" but people whom one respects the opinion of. If your income is such that you can only afford to go to the movies a couple times, or there are other things you could spend it on instead. I can absolutely understand that because I've been there.

I said I was nervous bc I love Trek as a franchise and I want to see it succeed. I'm not losing any sleep over it, and won't even if STB turns out to be an awful film. But the success or failure of a film can greatly influence the franchise and the tone and environment of the loyal fan base, not to mention public perception of the brand.

See: Nemesis, Phantom Menace.

And that trailer cut sharply against two of my big hopes for STB.

First is that it would slow down just a bit. Not TMP-type slow or anything but a little more nuanced and a character-focused piece set against a backdrop of big stakes. The second is that STB would be a more exploratory and would be largely set onboard the Enterprise....in space --"out there."

After rewatching it several times it's not as bad as I first thought. But I'm still...nervous.

I want STB to succeed in delivering general audiences an exciting experience while still giving the fan base a rewarding addition to Trek lore. I hope it does that.

Like I said, I'll be there.

So, I saw Star Wars on Saturday evening.

Oh, and the Trek trailer.

People applauded and seemed excited by the trailers for Dawn Of Justice and Star Trek. They loved Wonder Woman's appearance. Everyone laughed at Spock's being transported out and at Bones's reaction.

People didn't seem to like the World of Warcraft trailer at all.

Didn't see X-Men with ours. Did see Civil War, but I don't remember how people responded...which suggests that it was muted.

There was also Tarzan, but it led the group and the projector didn't even come on until halfway through the trailer - just sound.

That showed the second time I went to see TFA. Someone actually shouted "What the hell is that shit?!"

I really don't know what they were thinking with that one. Not only does it look terrible, but it's about four years too late.

I didn't get Trek or BvS either time. Was a little disappointed.

Yeah, I was pretty put off by the Warcraft trailer....for me, it was largely because of the horrid dialogue.

What's important is that the orcs and the humans will be fighting alongside. That's a major plot twist after they couldn't hire enough artists to draw a third race for WarCraft II.

Thank you, Mr. Pryor.

Studios keep trying to do Avatar on the relative cheap, or without understanding the technical demands to begin with. Whatever else Cameron is or isn't good at he understands the technology of what he's doing as well as the art. Somewhat the same is true for Jackson.

Movies where massive use of CG characters has worked nearly flawlessly: LOTR, Avatar, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Movies where it hasn't: Green Lantern, everything else.

Why do people "get nervous" or "worry" about movies?

The same reason people who pretend not to care about Star Trek are members and frequent participants in at least one Star Trek message board. The reactions are different and subjective, but the reason is the same. Because we care.

I imagine everyone here cares about Star Trek.

A lot of folks don't care about all the attendant crap and minutiae.
