The First Trailer

Shit, in the grand scheme of things, this is nothing. Remember when Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica raped the childhoods of an entire generation of fans? Remember Languatron and his high-literature published on Amazon speaking of a Grand Conspiracy between Universal and RDM to shut out Glen Larson? The screaming, histrionics and gnashing of teeth was a thing to behold - went full-on up to "eleven". We're only at a low-"five" boil right now.

The passion just isn't there any more. :D

Speak of the devil....he's still at it!
Goodness - he is indeed! I thought he dropped off the radar after NuBSG went off the air several years back.

I guess evil never sleeps...

More like stupidity never sleeps, in his case.

They all look like Star Trek to me.

Same here.

BTW, here's one for Voyager:

Even though the trailer is bad, I still think this will be the best of the 3 nuTrek movies. It looks like it has a more focused coherent story. That alone will probably make it better than ST2009 or STID.

I think it will the best of the three also. Limited use of Orci & Kurtzman will see to that.

Agree, but I would add JJ to that list. I think Abrams likes to jam pack his movies with as much "stuff" as possible, and in order to work it all in, the script has to jump around a lot. I think that was one of the problems with the previous two films.

Why would they?

It just seems to me that saying you don't understanding the complaining on grounds that 'It's just a teaser' would surely apply to anyone to complimenting it as well.

I think JJ is a fine director (albeit not a great one). He seems hellbent on emulating the styles of those he grew up with without really having a voice of his own. He's probably one of those who can succeed with the right material but can't elevate sub-standard stuff.

Uh, because people who liked it aren't really complaining?

I think his point was that it's equally preposterous to praise the film based on the teaser as it is to complain that the film will be terrible based on the teaser.

Both are moronic.

The teaser is a little controversial, 29% dislike, 71% like on YT.

I don't understand all the hate for this teaser. It's just a teaser, after all. You can't tell anything about the plot, or the score, or anything else about the movie as a whole.
My 1000-mile guess for the plot:

Act 1: The Enterprise, starting it's five-year mission, encounters a world with some kind of automated defense mechanism, akin to the Echo Pappa 607 from "Arsenal of Freedom", but instead of one, it's millions, and is being actively used by the main bad guy (played by Idris Elba) for reasons currently unknown - likely to build some kind of slave army from the crews of downed ships. The swarm effectively wrecks the Enterprise when it gets too close and crashes. On some of the quick shots that have been shown, this planet appears to be a starship graveyard, which is likely where we also see the "Franklin", or "Yorktown" or whatever. In fact, it is likely the consistent loss of multiple Starfleet vessels in this sector that tasks Enterprise to go out and investigate, meeting the same fate.

Act 2: They run into an ass-ton of aliens from all over the galaxy, easily allowing some cameo appearances from little-seen favorites. Some people think that one of them is a Reman and another a Caitian. Maybe true, and why not? The conditions of how beings wind up here could lead us to see any number of races, both known and unknown. The Enterprise crew joins the enslaved aliens and leads a rebellion against Elba's character.

Act 3: There are likely other ships hidden on the planet that the enemy has either built or retrofitted for their purpose. Kirk & co., with the help of other stranded Starfleet officers and aliens (like the female with super-white skin and black stripes - akin to Lokai and Bele from "Last Battlefield", maybe?) would need to coordinate effort to get to them and rescue everyone else off the planet, while at the same time wiping out the enemy (and maybe even the whole planet) to prevent anyone else from getting trapped there again.

Got no problem with the music, as it's clearly a call-back to the scene in '09. Kirk clearly has a history fetish (canonical, as many here have cited) and works with things that harken back to a "simpler time".

Looks like it's going to be a fun movie. Will gladly even pay top-dollar at an IMAX theater to see it, without hesitation. Bring it!

7 out of 10 like it and it has cut through the buzz of The Force Awakens on its opening weekend.

I'd say that this trailer is a pretty solid marketing move by Paramount.

Critiquing the teaser is one thing, and constitutes legitimate discussion. But passing absolute judgment on the final product and declaring hatred for the new movie months in advance based on the studio-mandated teaser trailer (which seems to be happening a lot) is something else entitely.

Personally, I prefer to be cautiously optimistic.

I don't understand all the hate for this teaser.

This teaser didn't come in a vacuum.

Ever since the reboot in 2009 a significant part of the fanbase has felt that the focus of the new films is leaning too much on action-advenutre. And then the first look at the third film did nothing to dissipate that notion, hence the initial negative reaction.

I'm sure cooler heads will prevail as more details come over the next few months, but this response should not really be that surprising to anyone.

Well it already has 9 million views. If 70% of them buy a $12 ticket, the film is already off to a good start. And it's still seven months away.

I think it's pretty funny even Lin didn't want the motorcycle in the trailer.

Lin said: "When I saw the teaser, I’m like, aw shit. You really have to put the motorcycle in there? So [for 'Fast and Furious' comments], I get it, I get it, I get it."

You can try and put a positive spin on it, but there's no question the trailer is getting a more negative reaction than any other trailer from the previous two films.
