The first song you remember listening to

Guitarded's favourite music thread made me think of songs I'd listen to as a small child in the early 70s. My family was living in the Netherlands and I remember sitting next to our big Blaupunkt radio listening to one of the Hilversum stations. The first song I truly remember listening to was When Will I See You Again? by The Three Degrees.

How about you? What's the first song you remember listening to? Was it on the radio, or did someone sing it to you?

By the way, I also remember the first time I heard that same song on a Golden Oldies station, but we won't go there.

I have no idea.

When I was young, our musical entertainment was singing. I wasn't much interested in listening to music at that age, so it isn't something I'd be likely to remember.

All that comes to mind is that my parents had some Abba tapes in the car which they once played for when I asked them what they were.

I don't remember how old I was or if that was the first time, but nothing else is coming to mind!

Probably "Music of the Night" from the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. Or something by Al DiMeola. My dad listened to these a lot while he was working out for some reason.

My brothers were teenagers when I was born and I spent a lot of time with them so...Run to the hill - Iron Maiden.

Radio Ga Ga is the earliest one I can remember. I guess I was about 5.

Not surprisingly, the first song I can recall being sung was "Hush Little Baby."

The first commercial song I rememer was "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" by B.J. Thomas. It was a big hit at the time. I also remember "Hey Good Lookin'" by Hank Williams very early on, I later found out it had a resurgence in '71-'72 because of The Last Picture Show. "Duelling Banjos" by Flatt and Scruggs was another very early memory. Interesting, those were all movie-realted.

Really? I remember a lot of stuff from around age 2.

ETA: Maybe I should say "recall," because the memories are more "impressions" of what was going on. I rememer those songs well, though.

The first song I think I remember was this funny variation of "Happy Birthday To You" with new lyrics by yours truly comprising my favourite foods and drinks at the time. It wasn't a smash hit.

As for commercially released songs, most of the songs my parents had were pop and country songs of the 50s, 60s and parts of the 70s, and I recall hearing them when I was very young. Much of it was the likes of Jim Reeves, The Shadows, and other such artists. I definitely remember "Theme from a Summer Place," "Apache," "Wonderful Land" and "Telstar" on their recurring playlist. Later, they managed to get their ABBA collection on tape and would play that all the time. They also had a tape of popular classical music, and that playlist included "Bolero" by Ravel and the "Pizzicato Polka" by Johann Strauss.

Of these, I think the very first song I remember was Don Williams's "You're My Best Friend." They seemed to play that and Charley Pride's "Crystal Chandeliers" all the time in the car.

The first contemporary pop song I remember, however, was Bucks Fizz's "The Land Of Make-Believe" which at the time I thought was the coolest thing ever,

I loved that song when it came out. I was 13 years old, and that's the excuse I'm sticking to. I have no idea how it came to be on that 80s compilation disc I burned on my computer a few weeks ago...

I remember someone singing "Springtime in the Rockies" to us as children and my sis got upset because she thought it was a song for me.

Other than that, probably a Bengali lullaby my mom used to sing (that I never liked), and Kishore Kumar songs that my dad would always have on in the car.
