The First - HULU Series with Sean Penn

I worked my way through The First on Hulu over the last couple of days. Sean Penn is actually watchable and very good in this. The series is outstanding in terms of acting, story and production values. Very good, highly recommended. Though set 15 years in the future, it's not really science fiction and more science-plausible/possible in it's depiction of life, vehicles and technology interwoven in the story

I just finished the series last night. It's only 8 episodes, so not a huge investment in time. Get's a bit 'artsy' at times but nothing too distracting and adds a bit to the overall tone. A highly recommend this show/series. The actual mission to Mars is really secondary to the main focus being on the characters, their family lives and the toll that being an astronaut takes on them.

Anyone else watching or has watched the series?

Is it better than NatGeo's series on the same subject?
Well, toneally, they are very different. NatGeo's is about the 'how', getting there and actually doing it. With this, it's more the 'why' to go, the personal sacrifices that the astronauts are making, the toll it takes on their personal lives and family dynamics. It also touches a bit on the politics of government interactions and endless funding hearings and debates. The First is defiantly a drama first, with bits of near-world future techie-ness sprinkled in. I hope that helps .... IMHO

It does. I'm trying to decide if I want to shell out for hulu just to see it.

They guy with all the old phones. I must've missed or miss understood what that was all about. I thought he was building a bomb in that old rotary payphone and then the room started shaking...

Not entirely sure my self. Some sort of artsy symbolism there ... someone enjoying a hobby with antique phones and then his shed shakes due to the launch of the Mars Mission. The last old technological milestone (phone = telecommunication area) being surpassed by the next technological leap of mankind going to another planet ???

I had a feeling that was going to happen in episode one.

Ship design is nice. More realistic that that monstrosity in The Martian. I'm hoping it will dock to a propulsion module with tanks and radiators. These are parts of spacecraft, stop omitting them. It's like a plane without wings.

And adjustable wrench? Maybe a torque wrench instead. Aerospace tolerances and all that. Just saying.

But a pretty good watch.
