The finale of Voyager and afterwards...

So, what happened to the Voyager crew during the last episodes of the season and after that? I'm thinking of reading the Destiny trilogy and I want to get an idea of what has happened up to that point.

Thanks!

Well most people consider the books that take place directly after Voyager to be extremely disappointing. I agree. You may want to give them a look though.

The Voyager characters don't play a large role in Destiny, but a major supporting character is killed in it.

Currently Voyager is going through kind of a relaunch with Full Circle by Kirsten Beyer. I haven't read it yet, but you could try that one.

I don't know how fully you want to be spoiled, so I'll leave it at that. Try the Treklit board for more details.

Even if you haven't read any other post-finale Voyager novels, you can pick up Full Circle and go with few-to-no problems. All the important facts from the other four are covered. However, if you read Full Circle first, you're spoiled for the major events in Destiny. Because Destiny was published before Full Circle, the Voyager characters don't play that large of a role in the trilogy - the Enterprise, Titan, and Aventine are the major ships involved in them. So I'd recommend reading Destiny first.

You should start with "Homecoming" and maybe read "The Farther Shore" too because those books will explain what happened immediately after Voyager got home.

Writing what happens next with Voyager has become something of a "cottage industry" with the fanfic writers on the internet. There are any number of them, including the two that KimC mentioned, that are better than what you'll find in the books--and the price is right!

:techman:

Not to get into the arguments that plague the Trek Lit board, but I just would like to point out that 'better' is a matter of perspective, and it's not a bad thing to sample several options - It doesn't hurt to try multiple dishes at the buffet, after all.

Some fanfic is better than officially published stories, but only some. IMO, majority of fanfic does not compare to Trek books. And their goals are usually slightly different as well. At least for me fanfic and Trek books mean different things and what constitutes a good fic does not equal what constitutes a good Trek book.

However, I must say that I personally preferred the Virtual Season 8 stuff a lot more than homecoming books. VV8 was full of action, adventure and drama. My hat goes off to all of those who have contirbuted.

It was definitely a labor of love. It was great how they did a story every week just like an actual TV series and they took great pains with the "cover art".

VV7.5 was by a different group of writers and the stories are also quite good.

Do you know if it'll be redone soon? At the moment the link just says it's coming soon.

The 7.5 stuff looks great, have read a couple, that's my time wasted successfully for weeks ahead ;) I'll get nothing done!

In reply to Tachyon about fanfic vs the real stuff, I think of it as a bit like going to see my favourite band Fairport Convention at a big professional venue, vs going to listen to whoever playing folk at the open mike night at my local pub. You don't expect a polished performance at the pub, same as with fanfic, and some of the people who stand up will be dreadful (or just not to my taste) and I'll waste time during their bits going to the bar or chatting to a friend, like with a poor fanfic or a kill - people -I -want-alive fanfic I'd stop reading after a few paragraphs. But just sometimes you get a real gem with raw talent, and both experiences are enjoyable just in different ways.

Fanfic is also different because generally people have some sort of axe to grind, eg J/C ers will focus on getting J and C together, and probably a lot of the time won't give any of the other characters much body, and will ignore things they want to conveniently (Not criticising negatively by the way - J/C fan fic is the stuff I usually read! I love the short fluffy ones! But the really really good ones are those that don't ignore everything else but still manage to get J and C together in spite of it all) More currently, there are beginning to emerge some resurrection fanfics, written in the style that the published stuff never would be even if pocket books did decide to go along those lines - they just get on with resurrecting instead of having some huge drama somewhere in the galaxy and the resurrection being just part of that eg in the Search for Spock. That's ok. I read them when I'm in the mood to - when I'm feeling down about the current direction I can get a 'quick fix'. They'd never have such a mass market appeal as a professional polished story - it's just different that's all.
