The Final Frontier is at least as good as Search For Spock!

I'm wondering what Star Trek III would have been like had they not chickened out and focused on Spock's return.

I like the idea of the studio having the balls to keep Spock dead (and not adding the coffin on Genesis scene to TWOK), but I don't relish the idea of Robin Curtis in the vulcan science officer role for the next 3 films. Of course that's assuming that Kirstie Alley still didn't come back and that Robin Curtis would still have been chosen for the role.

Star Trek V was the first Trek movie I saw after really only seeing All Good Things and then reruns of TNG's 7th season on WBFF FoX 45 Baltimore, and WDCA- DC20 Washington on my little atnetta TV. So to me it was neat, but I was confused because it was so different than what I expected. It was my first real exposure to the original crew. Seeing TFS as the 2nd movie I watched my dad and I rented it from blockbuster, I think I liked Trek V better than 3 at first, but I think 3 is the more classic film, just because of it nature, doing what it had to do bring Spock back. It the middle of the Star Trek trilogy. For me Star Trek V has always been about the concept of the Enterprise finds god, but when the do its a let down because he just a pissed off blue alien. But everything else to get there is fun, cept for the goofy row row, Shat falling, almost killing themselves in flourescent teal and purple turboshart labeled backwards with too many decks that doesnt even fit a turolift car, ugly desert uniforms, Kirk wearing a go climb a rock shirt from the Park giftshop on the bridge, the most unVulcan like Vulcan named Sybok that looked like a middle aged unempoyed drunk who watches TV all all day and a piece of shit starship SF Command gave em, and scotty had to much shore leave to fix, a Commander Uhura stripping and dancing naked in front of everybody with the physic reading grey gelled hair doo...um yeah maybe Star Trek 3 is way better!

Trek III just for quality if anything. Trek 5 is a mess.

I have always had a soft spot for Star Trek III -- it was the first Trek movie I saw in the theatre. I still watch it a couple of times a year -- it is not perfect, but there is lots to like.

In contrast, I also remember seeing Trek V in the theatre --- and people all around me chuckling during the film's climax (when Kirk, Spock, and Bones are confronting "God"). This was not intended to be funny ---- however I remember one guy saying loudly "This is better than Monty Python!" :)

ST III was primarily to work the series out of a corner they'd backed into, so expectations were lower. I remember finding it a bit tacky, but in the spirit of the TV series, perhaps because of that, and fun.

ST V followed the Unplanned, Ad-Hoc Trilogy, and had to blaze new trails. I know that I really wanted to like it. However ...

My wife checked the published reviews the day it opened and told me it was going to be awful. We still went to see it, but I had to agree with the consensus. Even with good Sp FX, the script has too many misfires and bad characterizations.
