The final decision on the movie's reference title...

Frack; I said Nemesis and I meant Insurrection, which, like TrekGuidesaid, is the actual ninth movie.

The "four years of Latin" argument is very tempting to this high school Latin scholar. I certainly won't complain if Trekdom ends up going the Roman numeral route.

This isn't Star Trek 11. Just like people didn't call First Contact STVIII, why should this latest one be called Trek XI? It's a reboot, and deserves it's own standalone ref title: ST09, considering the film is: Star Trek (2009)

I've been using Star Trek XI or ST-XI for the sake of simplicity, and since it's the most commonly used name since the first announcement of the film. I don't really understand why people get so riled up about it, it's not like it matters what you call it as long as you communicate your point effectively.

I don't use XI because it's innacurate. It's not a sequel. It's the first in a series. I'd know more call the new movie XI than I'd call Star Trek TOS. The name of the series isn't TOS. It's not a spinoff. It's a standalone that has a buttload of sequels.

It is accurate. Even J.J. now knows there were 10 Star Trek movies before it.

That's just being unnecessarily pedantic. It's just for simplicity and informal shorthand, it's doesn't make it the official title of the movie or show or anything. If you don't want to use it, that's fine, I just don't understand how anyone could possibly be bothered by it as if it's a big deal.

I hate the idea of calling it STXI, so I'll call it either ST, ST09, or nuTrek (just to tick off the 'nu' haters ).
Plus, if you follow your "ST09" logic, "Star Trek XII" might come out in 2011, so some people would call it ST12 while you call it ST11. That's just going to lead to confusion. Best to stick with the unambiguous Roman numerals.
"ST09" would just be to differentiate it from TOS (and Star Trek in general). I would imagine that the next movie will have an acronym or another nickname based on its subtitle, like every other Trek movie.

Exactly. The next movie in the new timeline will surely sport some of subtitle. STAR TREK: RED MATTER, or whatever.

Now that's a strained argument if I've ever heard one. Bob Orci called this movie a sequel to the entire Star Trek canon--and that's actually a pretty good descriptor.

Sure, like Generations, it represents the passing of a torch, but it's a bit silly to say that this movie ignores the first ten. It's really the most respectful "reboot" of a franchise in many, many years.

I'll go with XI or 09. It's like all those Godzilla movies that are just called "Godzilla" and get the year number added to the end.

Then again, calling it "Star Trek" is fair since no other Trek film has just been called "Star Trek."

STXI suggests it is a sequel, and that isn't exactly true, nor is it quite a Prequel.

It's both, and neither.

On that basis, I'd say ST09 is a good shorthand to use.

TrekMovie already uses this.

I'm using ST09 as well.

The next movie will most likely be titled "Star Trek: <Fill in the Blank>", and will be known as some shorthand of the "<Fill in the Blank>".

Any way you look at it, this is the 11th Star Trek movie made, and thus, Star Trek XI. The next movie will be the 12th Star Trek movie, therefore Star Trek XII. Is counting such a difficult concept?

Look at any of the concept art for Generations and First Contact. Most of it has "Star Trek VII" and "Star Trek VIII" written on it, despite those not being the official titles.

Anyone lament the fact that First Contact wasn't called Star Trek: Resurrection like it was originally planned?

Generations, Resurrection, Insurrection, Nemesis has a better flow to it than:
Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis.

Wasn't there already a thread about this?

Star Trek is the entire franchise.

ST09 is Insurrection.

ST11 is this new film.

Just because this new film is inconsistent and confusing with what has gone before, doesn't mean we need to be inconsistent and confusing.

Nothing confusing On the boards, Star Trek: Insurrection is INS. The shorthand for the movies: TMP, TWOK, TSFS, TVH, TFF, TUC, GEN, FC, INS, NEM. And the series: TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY (or VGR), ENT.

Star Trek (2009) - ST09. Works for me.

Blame JJ for not having a kewl tag in the title...

But ST11 implies it's a follow-up to NEMESIS--which completely misrepresents the whole reboot agenda of the new movie. And more distance we put between this film and the old sequence, the better!

Do we need an abbreviation? Why not just STAR TREK (2009)?
