The Far Side

I may have to get this. As for ones I particularly like, there are so many to choose from:

A group of cattle are standing around in a paddock, talking. A car appears on the nearby road; the cattle promptly drop to all fours. The car passes; the cattle stand up and resume their conversation. Brilliance.

Two deer are standing in a forest. One has a target on its chest. The second says: "Bummer of a birthmark, Hal."

Two others feature someone talking to a dog and a cat. In the first one, the dog hears only its name. In the other, the cat completely ignores everything the person says. Spot on, really.

A kid is standing before his shop teacher's desk. The teacher has his back turned and doesn't see the huge, menacing robot standing behind the kid. Caption:

"My project's ready for grading, Mr. Big Nose. HEY! I'm TALKING to you, squidbrain!"

Many are memorable
"Cat Fud" (the dog leaving signs to get the cat to go into the drier)
A bunch of birds on a frigid cold night on a sheet of floating ice. "You imbecile! We flew 14,000 miles for this!"

For people on the fence about getting the collection.. it's three paper back volumes all in a slipcase for $50. Over 4,000 cartoons. I have it right next to my monitor. I consider it "research". I also have Prehistory (to actually complete the collection, as some ones that were never syndicated are in there, and a nice person just sent me There's a Hair in My Dirt: a Worm's Story

My parents knew Gary Larson's parents. As I remember visiting their house one time in the 1970s, I may have even met him (but I was very young). But my dad loves to tell this story he picked up from them regarding why Gary Larson probably turned out the way he did:

Gary kept a tarantula in a terrarium. His mother wasn't very happy it was there, but she was okay as long as it stayed behind the glass. Well, one day she happened to take a look inside and — no tarantula.

Everything hit the fan. The way my dad tells it, she hustled the entire family outside and vowed that they were staying there until that monster was found. Some of the menfolk combed the house but found no sign of it. This did not help the situation.

Finally Gary's father went back to the terrarium, took the lid off, and lo! — there was the tarantula, huddled up inside the terrarium lid where it had been the entire time.

Situations like that one, my dad says, explain a lot about how Gary developed his unique sense of humor.

What a great story. I think his anthropomorphization of animals is the best anthropomorphizations done by anyone .. and there was maybe a human-like reason that tarantula did what it did!

Yeah, I saw the first one when it aired on Halloween back a long time ago.

While the second one may have aired later, it ended up originally not airing and I had to buy a VHS of it by ordering fro ma Far Side calendar I had back then.

Triva: Later on the score to the first one was dumped a new score was done.
