The Expendables ""all-female" version in the works

All-Female THE EXPENDABLES in the Works

Move over, fellas! The ladies are setting up to take to the screen in an all-female version of The Expendables. Adi Shankar’s 1984 Private Defense Contractors has selected Dutch Southern to pen the action script. In the past, the banner has co-financed The Grey, Dredd 3D, Broken City and Killing Them Softly. They’ve also previously picked up a hitman-action spec script from Southern titled Hoof Harrington’s Greatest Hits, which was pitched as a mashup of Payback and Snatch. The company is reportedly in talks with a number of prominent action actresses, but no names have been reported as of yet.

Well this is interesting. I didn't expect a spinoff so soon. They might have a hard time picking the right actresses though. I think Angelina Jolie being on the team is a given.

Who would you put on the team?

How many can we get. I'll try 5.

Sigourney Weaver
Angalina Jolie
Gina Cerano
Sharon Stone
Linda Hamilton

A little bit of the new mixed with a little of the old. It could work

I'd lean a bit more towards b-listers and has-beens as likely candidates.

Milla Jovovitch
Ali Larter
Kate Beckinsale
Lucy Liu
Halle Berry

Etc.

If it was similar casting to male version, I vote for:

Sigourney (definitely)
Linda Hamilton (ditto)
Angelina
Brigitte Nielsen
Cynthia Rothrock

(the last two are the Van Damme/Norris era homage)

I wouldn't mess with that line-up :)

You need

Weaver
Hamilton
Jolie
Yeoh
Bullock
Rothrock
Gellar
Saldana
Berry

We'd probably end up getting Maggie Q and either Jeri Ryan or Jolene Blalock

I'd be unable to resist trying to get Mulgrew and Michelle Forbes in there, if I was directing

Obviously, they can't all be on the same team, so you'd divide them up between good guys, bad guys, neutral parties, and mercenary competitors and spread them out over a couple of films, but I'd like to see these actresses make an appearance:

Sigourney Weaver
Pam Grier
Grace Jones
Helen Mirren
Linda Hamilton
Lucy Lawless
Carrie Anne Moss
Maggie Q
Gina Carano
Scarlett Johannsen
Jessica Biel
Zhang Ziyi
Katee Sackhoff
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Lucy Liu
Rhona Mitra
Brigitte Nielson
Angelina Jolie
Jennifer Garner
Kate Beckinsale
Michelle Yeoh
Summer Glau
Maria Conchita Alonso
Michelle Rodriguez
Uma Thurman
Halle Berry
Milla Jovovich
Yvonne Strahovski
Jessica Alba
Demi Moore
Rachel Ticotin

Even half of that list would be awesome, hope this movie works out. Will it be within the same canon or a stand alone?

I can't see this working as a sort of female version of Expendables.

What makes Expendables work is the cheesy, 80s/early 90s era brainless action movie in which most of the cast has starred (especially the cast in Expendables 2).. it is an hommage to all those dumb movies most of us enjoyed as a teenager but are now sort of afraid to admit that we ever liked them for fear of being labeled a dumb jock.

It is this charm and overdone action (i nearly blacked out from laughter when one of the guys cleared out a hallway with an assault shotgun.. it was so ridiculous :guffaw:) together with pure testosterone and bad but still hilarious one liners that makes Expendables so good.

All these female action ladies have never acted in such movies.. theirs were mostly straight up, 90s and 00s style action movies that tried to get in good acting and a good story. So if they do a mostly female version of Expendables it'll just be 100 minutes of women kicking some ass.. might be fun but nowhere near the glorious dumbness that is Expendables.

Wasn't the "fun" of this series seeing the older generation of action heroes from the 80's doing their thing one more (plus sequels) time?

Would this be a similar thing from the 80's? So we'd definitely get Linda Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver, Pam Grier, Cynthia Rothrock, and maybe Geena Davis?

Not a lot, I can see why it would need to be rounded out by the younger ones, but that feels like cheating. :p

What's Sandahl Bergman doing these days?

And Lucy Lawless is a must.

And, hey, what about Grace Jones? Or Jamie Lee Curtis? Or Kate Jackson? Or Lynda Carter? Or even Uma Thurman?

Oh, man, those are great suggestions too!

Let's keep it old school, no cheating, Hollywood!

Yeah, my original thought was the casting would be similar to The Expendables with all 80's/very early 90's stars. Cynthia Rothrock was the first one that came to mind. But after reading the thread, I agree, Linda Hamilton should be a "must" also.

I wonder how many people actually know Cynthia Rothrock, I thought I was like the only one so it's interesting to see her come up so much.

I guess one difference is that most of these ladies aren't known for these movies in the sense that one knows a "Seagal movie" or a "Chuck Norris movie" or a "Schwarzenegger movie" and so on and so on. So in that sense there isn't the same sense of a dream match-up.

I'd definitely want Pam Grier in there as she was one of the first action women and there is such a thing as a "Pam Grier movie". Plus she always played a bad-ass. Sigourney Weaver seems a good choice as well.

I like Michelle Yeoh because she's older but also has a number of films under her belt in the action vein. Linda Hamilton only being known for one film, for example.

After that, a lot of good choices have already been listed. One thing I like with Kate Beckinsale and Milla Jovovich is that they've carried action franchises. If they could actually get Angelina Jolie that would be a big name and she has done some legitimate action.

I'd prefer if there were more female cast members in the main Expendables films. Michelle Rodriguez would have to be a shoe-in.

Should it only star women, or should it also be directed and written by women?

Kathryn Bigelow (Hurt Locker, Point Break, Strange Days, K-19), Mimi Leder (Peacemaker, Deep Impact, Pay it Forward), or Lexi Alexander (directed Punisher: War Zone and is a former stuntwoman/karate-kickboxing champion herself) would be good choices for female directors.
