^ That gives me hope, because it seems like sci-fi is hedging their bets that this series will, if nothing else, raise their profile as a respectable network that actually produces quality content instead of the camp fest it has allowed itself to be since NuBSG. Despite the relatively low neilsen ratings, I think someone must have figured out that the numbers for streaming and DVD sales are the more important to watch for a science fiction drama and can actually make up the difference in the long run, whatever their overall production costs.
We can hope that the executives see The Expanse as a prestige project that will improve the reputation of their entire network, and not, as it were, the other way around (e.g. "Sorry, guys, we have SOOOOO many high-quality projects we want to pursue and unfortunately your ratings just aren't good enough for an internationally acclaimed network like the sifi channel)

Netflix in the UK promote The Expanse as a Netflix Exclusive so I don't know if the overseas sales revenue is keeping it financially viable for SyFy to continue making the series. I hope so...
Well - caught up as had an unexpected day off, and when marathoned it's not quite that bad. Still disappointed at the divergence they've taken from the book, and wonder how on Earth they're going to bring in the new characters from Book 3 to the first half of Season 3, the same way they brought Bobbie forward into the arc of Book 1.

- - Fourthly, if you bring spoiler discussion into a regular thread, please use the spoiler code. Otherwise, Spiff cries, and every time Spiff cries, he gets really blubbery. We're talking newborn baby here. Dude makes Niagara Falls look like the desert, you get what we're saying? So you don't want to make Spiff cry.
- - Finally, the statute of limitations on whether to consider an episode/film free of spoilers is SIX MONTHS from the time when it first airs, wherever it first airs. If a new episode of a series or film airs on June 1st in England then on Aug 1st in the US, the clock starts ticking on June 1st.
It would probably be useful to establish clear spoiler rules for the season 3 thread, whenever it is started. A clean fresh start and all that...
Just speaking for myself, I want to discuss just the show, and the episodes I've seen. I won't go into the season-discussion thread until I've seen the latest episode. So IMHO, discussing what's already been on TV is not spoilery.
For a book reader to interject, "Well, in the book, it happened THIS way," isn't spoilery. But it is kinda annoying

Was IS spoilery and obnoxious is for a book reader to display their special knowledge by saying something like "That was cool, and it looks like it's leading up to when they (insert plot point that hasn't happened yet on the show)." And if anybody is crazy enough to say "I'll sure miss that character when he dies," they should be summarily airlocked without a trial.

Did anyone else get an Expanse vibe from the new Discovery trailer? It seemed to me that Discovery was getting a lot of their look from The Expanse, lighting and colour wise. Even the uniforms.

I certainly did as well. Like you said, the costumes, the lighting and the colors are all certainly very similar.
Camera work too, although I hesitated to mention it since all we've seen is that little trailer.
They are both shot in Toronto so it's possible there's an overlap in camera/lighting/director/other such areass
Plus, it's just the modern style of cinematography. I'd say the look of The Expanse owes something to Battlestar Galactica, which owed something to Firefly. Every show has influences.
I have to disagree with that. There is a wide variety of modern cinematography/costuming styles they could have went with, and they went with one that looks a lot like the expanse - and very different from the Kelvinverse films.
I didn't mean there was only one style, just that it's a style that's used today and is not unique to only one show. As I said, every show has influences. Honestly, I haven't noticed any specific similarity between Discovery and The Expanse, aside from things that are pretty generic to a lot of modern shows.
And why bring the Kelvinverse films into this at all? I was talking about TV shows.
Simply because the look and style is so different from them, perhaps purposely so to help distance the show as its own entity. Not a criticism of either series.
Odd -- I've seen a lot of people jump to the conclusion that DSC is set in the Kelvin Timeline because of how similar they think it looks. I see similarities too, in the updating of the set designs, uniforms, and VFX style, and in the look of the Klingons. I assume that's because Alex Kurtzman is or was involved in both, so his tastes have an influence. Of course there are differences, but that's because they have different design teams. I see so many people trying to concoct explanations of the agendas that lead to the show and the films having similar or different looks, and I think that's overcomplicating it. They look different because they have different designers, because different artists have different styles and sensibilities.
Anyway, this is getting off-topic for this thread.
This is a rare time when the Hugos got it right in both short and Long form. Even before they split the categories, they were about 50-50 on their picks, with protest votes and politics dominating.
