The Ensigns of Command

Willieck

Commander
Red Shirt
I have a soft spot for this episode. Perhaps it has something to do with Eileen Seeley. :)

Gosheven always gets right up my nose (as he's supposed to) but I love the interplay between Ard'rian and Data. I also like the way Picard eventually wins the day by playing the Sheliak at their own game.

I think the better part of this episode is Picard and his dealings with the Sheliak.

i love this episode, the data plot is good - i especially liked the string quartet stuff which bookends the episode - the scene with picard at the end ("is there nothing of *data* in what i'm hearing?") is fantastic. still, though, i gotta agree that the best part of the episode is the picard/sheliak stuff. i love the weird, vague, indistinct and (vaguley) excalbian look of the sheliak, the scene where troi and picard discuss the difficulty of communication between alien races is very well written, and the "i hereby declare this treaty in abeyance" scene is one of the very best picard scenes in the entire series. great episode.

I always thought the character Ard'rian McKenzie would be the perfect girlfriend for Data.

Gosheven is great -- after all, his grandfather is buried on that mountain!

This episode is excellent. By that I mean it shows a tremendous growth and maturity for the series, a true advancement from the second to third season. Sure, watching it now, some of the acting is wooden, and the script stalls for time until it an come to the final conflicts on both fronts, but it is such a sound story that this hardly matters. I really like Data taking out the aqueduct. "That was the stun setting... this is not!" BAM! I nearly spilled my drink!

It IMO shows the best parts of the Picard character. he basically out-foxes, out-reasons and out-smarts them, and Picard on that basis of his character is probably the smartest (at the least wisest) captain. lol

Really good episode. One of the first from TNG that was really Trek worthy.

Do we know why Goshoven's voice is looped or dubbed so badly through the episode?

Apparently the actor felt his performance was poor.

Wow, how bad could it have been? Do you remember where you found this out? I could never find an interview on this.

Agreed. Also, the whole idea that the Sheliak founds humans to be vermin was quite interesting. If humanity does get into space, I wonder how many species would think of us this way -- and how many species would we find to be the equivalent of vermin or worse?
