The Dr M'Benga appreciation thread

Court martialed for not getting mental health treatment?

An investigation, maybe. Court martial? Interesting line to draw.

He shouldn't have engaged Rah in their fight exercise earlier in the episode. He knew he was having flashbacks but he went ahead and did it. M'benga messed up and had the gall to chew out pike. I'm not shocked Kirk didn't use him as chief medical officer.

No he shouldn't. But he did.

So now we punish him.

We don't know why M'Benga was no longer CMO during Kirk's tenure. As far as we know, it could have been M'Benga's choice not Kirk's or maybe M'Benga accepted a new assignment, but fate later returned him to the Enterprise but with McCoy now as CMO.

Incidentally, for what it's worth, my current boss decided to step down as a supervisor for personal reasons, but is still with the company. As such, because I've been around longer, I now have seniority over him. So it is possible for someone to leave a job but return/stay with less authority than they had earlier. For some, it's a deliberate career choice that suits them better due to a change in personal priorities.

We don't know where M'Benga will end up career-wise. We have only two brief incidents from a TOS episode, which may not line up with where SNW takes him.

Agreed. But then, do we even know it's the same M'Benga in TOS? It could be his brother Jack, or his cousin Giuseppe?

Are you one of the guys who really wanted Boyce?
Also, I'm pretty sure the flashback scenes were not meant to be seen as psychotic break type flashback (not completely anyway) but more as a storytelling device so that we had a way into the deeper backstory.

Whatever you took away from that last scene (regarding gall and the having of it) didn't look like that to me. Nobody was chewing anybody out. It was sad, but civil, telling a friend - no disrespect, but you haven't lived my life.

It was similar to what Chapel told Spock - you can't understand, you have no frame of reference, you can't help, and I'm not going to talk about it with you. (Boyfriends, husbands, brothers, dads, friends - bless 'em, they just can't fix all the problems, no matter how much they want to.)

He was having flashbacks about killing the 3 klingons. The other scenes with Chapel at the emergency evacuation hospital were just for story telling and give us a point of reference. M'Benga was obviously having issues from the get go. The thing is he's a doctor. If anyone else on the crew were having these issues he would take them off duty. Pike is the captain. He's in charge and he has a right to know if someone on his crew as important as the chief medical officer is having issues. M'benga is totally wrong and is not fit for duty.

We don't know what will happen after the last scene. Pike says there will be an inquiry. There is no "Dragnet" afterwards to let us know the results.

Yeah. Since they seem to carry over some stuff from previous eps we might get some inkling what happened but it probably won't be until season 3.

A few wrist slaps. And the occasional "don't do it again." And once someone was told they'd never command a starship
They did

Exactly. He deserves some kind of consequence. Once he's served his punishment he gets a second chance like pike says the Federation gives people..
