Wasn't the point of the Doomsday Machine that it was an *ancient* weapon?

Our heroes come up with all sorts of excuses for not having met something like this before (or for not having read about others meeting it), including "it came from outside the galaxy" and "it must be ancient". Yet the Space Amoeba of "Immunity Syndrome" similarly appeared out of nowhere to present a massive threat, and our heroes concluded these things may be common in the galaxy and can make their presence known every now and then, necessitating counteraction from the heroes or their like.

It sounds quite possible that the DDMs are also a common feature of the Milky Way, and that they might also have a "biological niche" similar to that of the Space Amoebae. Perhaps they destroy old planets in the name of allowing the agglomeration of new ones in the same solar system, without the need to blow up the star and start all anew? Perhaps they are the spatial equivalent of earthworms? Or perhaps their berserking is intended to promote the spatial expansion of advanced cultures and to dissuade them from getting stuck within their vulnerable home system?
