The Doctor's real name?

It seems that the Doctor's name (so far as we know) is Chrístõdavõreendiamondhærtmallõupdracœfiredelúnmiancuimhne de Lœngbærrow, as revealed in "Unfinished Business" series of online Doctor #9. It is unclear whether or not he was joking, however we do know that in Gallifreyan culture personal names are usually reserved for family, so I don't know.

Actually, the books do count due to the BBC never making an explicit declaration of what constitutes canon. The only rule - and even then I don't think the BBC has ever come out and said it, however it's universally accepted - is that it has to be "sanctioned" in some way by way of licensing from either the BBC or other authorized body. So if a novel ever went there - just as the novels have given the Master a name - then an argument could be made.

But if it's fan fic, that doesn't count at all. Otherwise I could write a story claiming the Doctor's name is George and then post a thread saying his name is George.

The Doctor's real name is the ultimate "don't go there". It will never happen on television - River Song may know his name, but we won't hear her say it on screen - and it will never happen in an officially sanctioned spin-off, whether that be audio or book or comic. It's the unbreakable rule.

Nothing counts, really. It's all being constantly rewritten and contradicted. People assume that Doctor Who is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's... er... not. It's really not.
