Press release about it

Production starts today (Monday 12 July) on the 2010 Doctor Who BBC One Christmas Special in which the thrilling adventures of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and newlyweds Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will continue in a fun-filled and heartfelt festive story.
In the grand tradition of Doctor Who Christmas specials, this year the show has once again attracted stellar guest stars as veteran actor Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Singing Detective) and opera diva Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role, join the Time Lord for what might be his most Christmassy adventure yet!
Arriving on set for her first day of filming, Katherine Jenkins said: "I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special – I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!"
About the series, lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, commented: "Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you'll see. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically."

So I take it rumours regarding a special guest star from Doctor Who's past were false after all?

Re: The Doctor Who 2010 Christmas specials rumors and speculations thr

Very cool. I've been looking forward to the Christmas special since the end of "The Big Bang".

Still too early to tell. If the special guest star turned out to be true then i'd expect BBC would like to keep it a secret.

If they can't afford any past doctors/they're too busy they could do another doctor's montage

Re: The Doctor Who 2010 Christmas specials rumors and speculations thr

Bah! I grow sick of the montages. Also, of images of Hartnell inserted randomly into episodes. If they can't actually get a previous Doctor, than don't bother with the trip down memory lane.

Re: The Doctor Who 2010 Christmas specials rumors and speculations thr

It's a montage of homages!

I was curious and decided to investigate this Katherine Jenkins and wow...beautiful woman and she can really sing!!!Will be interesting to see who she plays in the christmas special.

^ Montages? Do you mean homages?

No I meant montages of all the Doctors, like what we had in The Next Doctor, The Eleventh Hour, and a partial one in The Lodger.

Also, Hartnell's picture popping up in in Vampires of Venice and Vincent and the Doctor (which also included Troughton) is getting tiresome too. Eventually, they should just bring a previous Doctor back for an episode rather than just constantly show images of one or all of them every 5 episodes.

Re: The Doctor Who 2010 Christmas specials rumors and speculations thr

I don't see how showing pictures of Hartnell creates any kind of expectation. John Nathan-Turner did one of those montages once a season during his early tenure (Logopolis, Earthshock, Mawdryn Undead, Resurrection of the Daleks).

I suspect the reason it is happening is to remind the audience that Tennant was not the first, and Tennant was not the last. Doctor Who Magazine did a monthly feature on past Doctors leading up to the regeneration for a similar reason.

I just want them to change the pictures in their slide shows once in awhile lol

It seems they always use the same footage of Hartnell turning around.

EDIT: OOOOH very clever! Someone at BBC flipped the image.

Re: The Doctor Who 2010 Christmas specials rumors and speculations thr

I've enjoyed the Ten Doctor homages and montages...it just reminds the audience that this show is larger in scope and yes I agree with Steve Mollman's assessment. Moffat himself has commented on the usage of the Doctor's I believe as well. I've no problem with them and if a previous Doctor actually does show up on the show I'll be ecstatic.

Re: The Doctor Who 2010 Christmas specials rumors and speculations thr

^ Yeah, me too. I noticed those were gone. :(

But at least the bow tie is still there. Bow ties are cool! :techman:
