Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

With the current state of the show Doctor Who will most likely be limping along by the time the 50th anniversary comes around.

Indeed, i bet the BBC are absolutely devastated by the 8.9 million viewing figures. Clearly the sign of a show in decline.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Complete fucking shit. Spectrox toxaemia looked more fun. Doctor Who now is the result of a previously not untalented man with complete control and no one to say no to him, convinced of his own cleverness and brilliance because no one around him's going to say otherwise.

Says the man who hates Doctor Who. Color me surprised.
I do not hate Doctor Who. It's one of the greatest TV shows ever. And I especially like the Sixth one.

Finals will easily push the x mas special past 10 million, then you have the fact the repeat scored 1.1 million, the fact the original airing scored the highest share % on all channels on Christmas day.

Oh BBC I Player numbers too that will push a million ;)

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I'm curious, how exactly do they come up with these viewing figure numbers? Also, do they factor in those people who just had the TV on for background noise or turned it off part way through?

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Hey, has anyone seen a s7 preview? There's normally one at the end of the xmas special, but this time, nothing.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

That's because the season doesn't start until late 2012 instead of Spring 2012.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Also, they haven't even started to film the new season yet. That doesn't start until February, I think.

They're not the same show.

Anyhow, I really enjoyed this special. It had a delightful Bill Bailey cameo, the actress playing Madge was excellent and Matt Smith was in fine form. Sure, the story was a muddle, but the feel-good climax and the coda with Amy and Rory were just what I needed in a Christmas special. Smith's Doctor kind of snuck up on me. At first, I longed for the days of Tennant: softly saying he was so very sorry before turning up the righteous indignation to 11, but after two years Matt Smith has crafted a nuanced and convincing portrayal of The Doctor. I think he might be my favorite of the three modern Doctors, narrowly beating out Eccleston.

^ They are the same show. It's just that the current version is a lot better than the older one.

The current show is produced by different people, filmed at a different studio and only vaguely resembles the absolute crap-fest of the original. It's a soft-reboot with some fan-service thrown in for good measure.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

^ And those producers have made it clear that it's a continuation of the original show.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

So saw it last week on the Beeb while in Ireland, (Only Beeb channel my other halves parents couldn't get was the News Channel so had to slum it watching RTE News or Sky) seemed ok from what I saw, had a few distractions while watching it (a blind dog, me winning at Scrabble on an IPad and an Irish Mammy fussing) so didn't really follow what was happening and due to one thing or another, I haven't got round to rewatching it yet.

From what I saw though, it did seem like just a massive build up to the final couple of minutes and The Doctor showing up in Ledworth.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I gave the episode the worst rating the poll made available out of protest.

This episode played on Christmas evening when a lot of people are out visiting, therefore not in control of a TV and/or busy socializing with family.

Only replays overnight, none during the week. At one time the cable guide was showing it for a repeat this afternoon (Dec 31) , but now it's showing an all day-evening marathon of another BBC series. Guide doesn't show any more repeats (like I would trust it now). I don't know if the changes were the result of the cable company or BBCA making changes with little notice. I had a similar problem with a movie on another channel, but that was with a schedule for a different channel on a web site's TV listings. Of course the marathon interfered with the normal following week repeat.

BBCA doesn't participate in the local cable company's on demand system. While such availability does cut into viewers motive to watch material during the actual channel plays, other channels that participate in OnDemand don't mind playing just as many commercials during those playback as they do during normal channel repeats (although I've never tested it, the non-premium channels even claim to have disabled fast-forward).

BBCA doesn't make episodes available on their web site. BBC's videos won't work outside the UK (I'm in the US).

Before anyone jumps down my throat for not taping it myself, my VCR has gone out on me and the cable bill is straining my budget as it is without the higher rental for a DVR box plus monthly DVR fees. Most of the tome the OnDemand capability that comes with digital cable service serves that purpose as long as the programming I eant to watch is on a participating channel. Besides, I was relying on the Dec 31 repeat that was showing on the guide when I checked it a week ago.

Isn't the clue in the title: "Doctor Who Christmas Special"?

You'd have thought that wouldn't you, but it seems not everyone would grasp that slight and unimportant detail.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

When else are they going to air a Christmas special? It sucks the poster member was out with family and friends and missed it. So was I. I missed last year's for the same reason but managed to catch the Boxing Day repeat. I this might be the first time I've seen someone make a complaint about a Christmas special being aired on Christmas day!

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I rarely, if ever see the DW Xmas special as it goes out. If I'm at home, I'll probably be putting the kids to bed. If I'm in my parents, it'll cause a row with my Dad if I try to watch it. And if I'm in the in-laws, I won't be able to hear it for the mother-in-law talking shite. But that's what Sky Plus, I-player or VCRs are for.

I would have thought it a cause for celebration that DW is now seen as one of the big hitters of the Christmas schedule, along with the soaps.

I just think it's ridiculous that you would judge the quality of the episode based on its airdate and the fact that your local cable company won't put it OnDemand.

My cable company doesn't provide BBCAmerica at all.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Yea, I got screwed on Primeval S4 Ep 6, when I was out of town during the airdate and Comcast or BBCA decided to pick that week to discontinue airing BBCA programs on On Demand.
So, yea, All BBCA gets recorded onto Disk (CW also), but, pretty much everything else is on On Demand, and yea, that should count in the ratings, because most of the networks do indeed have the fast forward disabled (Even if you rewind, you can't fast forward back to where you rewound from).

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

BBC America has it on again on 1/07 at 3 pm Eastern. For those who missed it the first few times round.
