News The Disney+ (The New Streaming Service) Thread

What??? 30 minutes is literally half of 60 minutes.
But you were never promised 60 minutes, all you were promised was episodes of The Mandalorian and that is exactly what they delivered.
The only way they would be 1/2 an episode is if they were cutting out half of the produced episode, but what we are getting is the complete episodes, they're just short.

Can't. Paid up front for 3 years.

Well, that was a choice. But I’d still like to know where they promised you a 60 minute show. That seems like a personal expectation that was not met. But I really don’t recall anywhere where it was stated The Mandalorian was going to be an hourlong. In the meantime, maybe try to go in without preconceived notions?

Unless they stated that you were getting 60 minutes of content you are not getting "half a show." You are getting a story, told in a different style than other stories.

Thus far, it sounds like the story is being told. What personal expectations are is not on the company.

And again, maybe a later chapter will be 80 or 90 minutes. As long as it’s how long that part of the story is supposed to be, what is the problem?

A two year contract to screen the mandolorian 5 times, when Disney isn't planning on getting there to that coutry for 5 years.

If they aren’t getting there for five years, there might not be a lot of people to warrant licensing even.

I’m curious: do you think Disney isn’t very good at this stuff?

It's expectations set by the entire history of premium television.

is that Disney’s fault, because it seems like your the only one that has that expectation.

I’ve been waiting for some streamer to break out of this silly hour/half hour box for awhile now. Why an hour? There’s no schedule to follow.

Anyhoo, at least there’s a lot more on offer at Disney +. Enjoy your next 3 years!!

It's not Disney's fault at all. It was an assumption, and one that had no reason to be expected. Premium content is a matter of production values, not length.

The definition of good used to be selling the same product to a sucker 5 times, and being thanked.

I suppose with streaming, they are selling the same product 12 times a year, until the end of the world.

You remember that Discovery airs on 2 cable channels in Canada? Space in English, and Z in French. So there is stuff in the Discovery actors contracts about being allowed on cable, if not terrestrial broadcast, like how the pilot aired on CBS regular, first and has probably been rebroadcast as a movie since then at least once.

the Discovery thing is a fair point. But I would be surprised if Disney would license any of their shows. Disney + is a much bigger platform than CBS all Access. It would be against their interests.

It's against their interests now.

They are obviously consolidating.

But later, they may want stretch out again.

The first episode was just over 40 minutes. Shows like TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, SG1, the list goes on, aren't 60 minutes. Without commercials, they're usually 42-45 minutes. The second episode was just over 30. We don't know about the rest yet, right?
I don't see a problem, because there isn't a problem. You're creating one for yourself. Judge the show on quality, not quantity.

And still longer than a broadcast half hour television show. As I said, nobody complains that animated shows are only half an hour---why complain that an effects heavy show is about the same length?

In Africa, most satellite cable comes from South Africa and House of Cards is licensed to air on television, but cannot be found on Netflix.

You're making the same error I made for the first half of this conversation.

Levels of inception.

TV >> Cable>> Streaming.

Streaming is not Cable.

Something else btw....

A few times now, I've started watching something, and the audio/video isn't synced properly. If I go back 10 seconds, it'll sync up fine. Anyone else had this? On my Samsung tv btw.

Is anyone watching The World According to Jeff Goldblum? This is a very trippy show. I know Jeff is a pretty "Interesting" individual, but I really wonder if this is an act, kinda like Gordon Ramsey on Hell's Kitchen. There is a sense of wonder in this series but there's also a sense of "dumbness" maybe? With that said, I think I enjoyed the Ice Cream episode more than the Sneakers episode. Next week it's all about Tattoos.

Oh, I’ve had tons of problems with my Samsung TV. A/V sync. Buffering until it times out. Then it not starting back where I left it. I’m thankful I have my AppleTV (which is far less buggy) otherwise I’d be really annoyed. Regardless, they really have some work to do on the app.

It does seem that he's aware of his idiosyncrasies, whether or not that's always been the case I'm not sure, so he may be playing them up some intentionally or not.
