The Defenders--Marvel/Netflix

I wish they had Elektra doing some super strength stuff. Other than punching away one Hand guy and Matt, she did absolutely nothing to justify her
Slapping around Jessica and Luke Cage, even oneshotting the former twice and hurting the latter, then appearing to have zero strength advantage over Matt and Danny. Degrades those two imo. And Luke being hurt by Mukarami had no explanation either. Atleast Stick explained Sowande's being nerve strikes.

Also, Jessica had Elektra downed and on the floor after shoving the vehicle onto her. Why didn't she just punch her out before moving to the group?

Just finished the show. Loved that they gave each character roughly equal screen time and development. Loved that they included the secondary characters. Pretty much enjoyed the plot and story.

Man, Danny is the Luke Skywalker of these series. i.e.: "Luke, don't go in the cave with your weapons" - Luke goes in the cave with his weapons. "We need the Iron Fist to open this portal" - Iron Fist declares he'll never be used to open the portal, then gets easily maneuvered into punching open the portal.

I also just finished Defenders and I really was pleased with it overall. You could really sense the raw foundations of a Luke & Danny relationship beginning to scratch itself out. The interaction and subtle regret acknowledged by both Luke and Jessica for falling out of contact was nicely done in a minimalist way. Charlie Cox as Daredevil/Matt was once again spot on great! Elektra was playing the role of "mind control Hawkeye" for much of the story and felt short changed. I'm not fully convinced she had re-found herself as she tried to convince Matt she had. That person didn't mix with the flashback sequences with Stick while discussing Chaste goals. I feel Elektra still has room to grow the most from this series. That said I feel largely good with the growth of Danny Rand here. Still hot headed and not prone to being rationale. He's way too single minded and acting on impulse but some growth was there. Also, Stick...probably not dead. The Hand, as led by Elektra did manage to harvest some more of the "substance" before the building came down on them.

Bring on Punisher!!! The dozen set pics that EW mag showed looked nice!

io9: Only Netflix knows for sure, but there is some evidence that The Defenders was their lowest-viewed Marvel show in its first month... by a lot:

Netflix itself never releases hard numbers about the amount of people who watch a show on their service, but marketing-analytics business Jumpshot’s own analysis of data from the first month of Defenders’ availability on the platform claims that just 17% of the amount of people who tuned in for Daredevil’s second season’s first month of availability—allegedly the most watched of all the Marvel Netflix series—found themselves watching at least one episode of Defenders. (Jumpshot’s methodology looks at U.S. users and anonymously tracks what they click on, excluding mobile and those that stream to TVs.)
Damn. Maybe they should have placed more emphasis on defending their script quality control. :p

Just finished watching this tonight. I have to say it was pretty underwhelming. The Iron Fist character is a dud and so is his storyline. Luke Cage seemed fairly wasted here--even his relationship with Jessica was acknowledged what, a whole 30 seconds? The only thing Defenders did for me is remind me how much I liked Daredevil.

I hope The Punisher is better than this.

If that method is saying people didn't watch any episode at all, I'd suspect it was the quality control on IF that caused the issue more than that on Defenders. I mean, sure, word of mouth exists, but still - this is an ongoing series that most viewers have probably been actively engaged in already. Just trailers and lukewarm word of mouth wouldn't be enough to make it the least viewed installment in the series - so people are probably reacting to having already had a bad experience with the last installment.

Since these figures exclude mobile and streaming-TV viewing, I wouldn't place much stock in them. Maybe it just means more people are buying streaming TVs lately. This "evidence" is too indirect to accept without more corroboration.

Also, purely anecdotally, I know people who haven't watched all of the shows and want to wait until they catch up. For the other shows they don't even watch them in production order, but with Defenders, feel they need it all under their belt.
(Most people I know have seen both Daredevil seasons, but have yet to see Cage or Iron Fist it seems for some reason)

Basically, can't Matt just wear a damn costume and fight crime without people trying to get him to quit or him going back and fourth with whether he should be a hero or not? Can't I just enjoy Daredevil being Daredevil without this nolanesque "You shouldn't be a hero" BS?
I...have to agree with this. Foggy and Karen's constant whining about Matt being Daredevil got old real fast. I found myself wishing Defenders had used a couple less supporting characters from the solo shows.

It was partially made up for by the geek-out reaction that Matt got from Luke and Danny when they first saw him suited up. I liked how Matt kept his cards close to the chest about who he really was with the others early on, because it paid off when they found out.

An interesting commentary on the comics vs. TV portrayal of The Hand:

Late to the game, I know (it took me months to make it through episode 9 of Iron Fist), but loved this. For me, one of my favorites of the Netflix series. Now on to the Punisher.
