The Defenders--Marvel/Netflix

At this point I'm expecting much more than one or two scenes each from the characters' supporting cast members.

For what it's worth, a typical episode of a Netflix original runs maybe around 55 minutes, give or take, whereas a typical commercial-TV episode is a bit over 40 minutes. So we're talking maybe about 1/3 longer per episode, and 1 1/3 times 8 is nearly 11 episodes' worth. That's almost half a season for a typical network show.
 
The advantage of using already established characters is that they don't need a lot of the usual set-up. Also, since several of them already know each other you can economise character development scenes by pairing some of them up at various moments.

For example, take a look at the Banner/Romanoff scenes in 'Age of Ultron'. There was more going on in their shared time than a simple budding (yet doomed) romance. They each had their own personal character arc play out in that movie, each with their own internal struggle.

They can do similar things here with Luke & Jessica, Matt & Frank and Clare & pretty much anyone since they all have history. Or they can throw unexpected pairs together and have them bounce off each other in new and interesting ways.

So yeah, I agree 8 episodes is plenty.
 
Yeah we know these characters already so 8 episodes structurally shouldn't be too much of bummer.

13 episodes is certainly hit and miss on Netflix. In terms of the Marvel shows, I think Daredevil S2 and the beginning of Luke Cage dragged, so I can certainly see the argument for tighter seasons.

I am curious to see how much of a role Clare will play in bringing everyone together, so far she is the biggest connection between the characters.

So far she's the *only* connection between Matt & anyone else and if her last scene is any indication, she'll be meeting Danny pretty soon too. It's a safe bet she'll be the one making introductions. Indeed, IIRC she's already made the offer; once to Jessica and I think twice to Luke.

That said, there would seem to be a separate connection between Danny and Matt assuming the Hand and/or Madame Gao's faction are involved in his story.

I dunno... Claire said she knew a really good lawyer, and if there was one thing DD season 2 made clear, it's that Matt Murdock is a terrible lawyer. Maybe she was talking about Foggy? ;)

There's also the connection provided by Jeri Hogarth -- Jessica Jones worked with her, Foggy now works for her, and she's going to be in Iron Fist, in what presumably would be something like her comics counterpart's role as the Rand family's lawyer.

That actually really was my assumption, given the impression he left on her talking down those two thugs.

Sure, but there's a degree of separation there as Foggy hasn't actually met Jessica yet that so far as we've seen.

Anyway, didn't Hogarth say something in her DD cameo about representing Enhanced individuals? Or something to that effect. If so then maybe it'll be that company taking up Luke's case, not Matt. It's fairly high profile and it'd certainly put them on the map if they're looking to attract other Enhanced clientele.


Regardless, it's clear that they're very deliberately including Claire in all these different shows for a reason. At this point it'd be a bit of a weird coincidence if they all met each other independently without her being involved somehow.

Yeah, I believe we were pretty much told that up front when Dawson was first cast, that Claire would be the "Nick Fury" figure tying the Netflix shows together.
 
This is definitely the first time we've had confirmation that Karen would be in The Defenders.

Come to think of it, despite hearing his voice in the teaser, have we actually had confirmation that Scott Glenn is in it, too?
