The dedicated Disco crying thread

Not very successfully apparently, slowest character arc ever.
I'll take it. Better than trauma being glossed over and ignored after the credits. Maybe DSC swung to hard the other way but Trek has dealt with mental health so poorly that I'm happy that Burnham is taking her time in healing.
Valuable? not sure about that but definitely more useful.
What's the difference in this context? Stoicism is useful to a point but it won't heal trauma related problems.

The complaining about actual crying and "crying" is all the Fandom Menace has left to complain about with Discovery because they know they don't have anything else now besides "But, but, but I just don't like Michael Burnham! And I just have to say it all the time because that's what I do!" So they'll just take it and run with it. No matter how it makes them look. My thoughts on it here.

That’s pretty much it. Times are hard for these guys, full time hate is just an exhausting business, especially when there’s nothing really there to legitimately hate. We have to give them something, I guess! Funny thing is, the thing they’re complaining about is the thing they’re actually doing...being a crybaby

disagree, I like the show, the actress and while I think Burnham is a flawed character (and yes, all characters have flaws) she has been improved this season. Especially when she is away from Discovery either on her own or with Book.

but the crying is over done and in very many ways a crutch. Like it’s the only way the writers can convey that a scene is supposed to be sad. “See, Michael is crying...you should be too”. It’s used so much, it robs it of its meaning. That’s why it’s become a thing...at least around here.

and it has nothing to do with her being a woman. If Kirk had cried that much people would wonder...what the fuck is wrong with Kirk. I don’t think Janeway every cried but she did get choked up when it was appropriate and it was fine. But it wasn’t every episode or every time something went sideways.

WT...:wtf:

Did I miss a memo where if someone in a show is experiencing an emotion I must also feel that exact same emotion? I thought it was about learning another person's perspective.
I've never said Burnham isn't a flawed character. The fact that she fucked up so spectacularly in "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle at the Binary Stars" is why I've always said she's not a Mary Sue.
Indeed yes. Burnham's flaws make her all the more appealing character for me.

I remember two moments: When Kes left, and when the Doctor sang Rondine al nido.

I know people who really cry all the time and don't even know themselves why they're "built so close to water". So it's not unrealistic or implausible, but the effect on the viewer wears off quickly. It's like too much shooting and explosions in action films - if people are shooting all the time, and everything explodes, it's no longer exciting. Or if a horror movie has jump scares every 5 min, it quickly won't work anymore.

List the number of times she's cried. Don't say "every episode" and be done with it. List specific examples. Tears have to come out of her eyes or no dice.

Actually I wouldn't mind a list with context. if she cries every time she has to say goodbye, that would make sense as she didn't get to say goodbye to her parents.

I think the writing on the show is just so sloppy and inconsistent and it's so frustrating to watch that play out on screen. It amazes me how some of it has either gone unnoticed by the writing staff or is noticed, but, just ignored.

I mean...when I say “every episode” I’m clearly exaggerating. Like when you say “I must have been going a million miles an hour”

Although, she has cried in all but what, 2 episodes this season.

"I find it hard to believe I've travelled millions of miles... " "Thousands! Thousands!" "Thousands of miles... "

Don't forget that even when she isn't crying she often feels like she is about to break out in tears at any moment.

I've seen it thousands of times! Well, hundreds of times. Maybe fifty times.
Janeway's reaction was so funny XD
