^It is prestige quality television, though, and it raises the profile of the BBC brand all over the world. That may be enough.

Oh I wouldn't deny that, I've just never bought the conspiracy theory that the BBC wouldn't sack Moffat (or in this case will give him a say about his successor) simply because he might take Sherlock away from them. For one thing Dr Who must bring in more money than Sherlock, and is a more viable long term show, and if Moffat did take his ball home with him he'd only be cutting his nose off to spite his face.

I believe Sherlock has already had a S4 confirmed.

Anyways, it's cool to see a special, abbreviated Confidential episode for this episode and narrated by Colin Baker, no less. I guess he really was joking around with that Twitter message about not being involved at all. Also, it was good to hear him joke around about his costume.

Loved the "Happy birthday" messages at the need. Too bad they couldn't get messages from Peter and Sylvester. Ah, well.

Yet again its up to the fans to get it right.

Supposedly there was a full regeneration shot but the CGI came out bad so it was shortened. Fans are always upstaging the VFX on Doctor Who lately. I think the BBC should find another VFX company to use IMO.

Another big VFX mistake was them using Matt Smith's Tardis model in a couple places that they should have used Hurt's or Tennant's Tardis:

- Night of the Doctor shows Smith's Tardis (not McGann's) racing towards the spaceship.

- When the War Doctor's Tardis (the white paint splattered version) crashes though the wall and destroys the Daleks the next shot shows Smith's Tardis spinning into the air.

- Right after we see the 'England 1592' (Fringe style) caption it pans over and shows Smith's Tardis with the doors closed, the next shot we see Tennant's Tardis with the doors open as the horse emerges

So the VFX and the music score were not quite up to par with this special.

Mixing up which TARDIS is common from back in S5. They showed the Smith TARDIS in the opening scene of The Eleventh Hour and the Tennant TARDIS in the opening scene of The Time of Angels.

To be fair, the 3D was probably the reason they couldn't do that; the Eccleston reference was taken from a 2D photo - the promo one from the billboards if I'm not mistaken - and it might have looked a bit naff on the big screen in 3D. Ironically, if it had been a regular episode, they might have been able to do something like that.

This was a brilliant episode. The acting was great, the story was great, everything was just awesome. The three Doctors worked very well together, and it was a great way to celebrate the anniversary. The curator was really cool. The last scene, with all of the Doctor's looking at Galifrey, was amazing. I really enjoyed this special.
