THE DARK TOWER will be made into a movie

^ I had forgotten about that but ultimately it's basically the same thing at the end of the day.

Not really, because being a sequel to the novels allows the film - and sequels - to expand on their source material in a way that wouldn't be possible if they were direct adaptations while also directly building upon and justifying/legitimizing King's decision to end the story the way that he did.

I've never read the books, but after hearing the movie is a sequel and also appeared to be telling the same story as the first book, I looked up how the last book ended to see how that was possible, and I am intrigued. I have to admit, I think it's actually kind of a brilliant idea. This way things can actually use the books to explain why things aren't playing out exactly the same way they did in the books.

"The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed"

Man, i still get chills still today from that opening line and i can't wait to see this play out in the theatre. One thing though (and it's been ages since i read the books).. why are Roland's guns glowing with some runes?

I can't recall them ever do that or it being mentioned.. they were "just" regular revolvers which Roland used expertly. Is it just a marketing thing to include some mystical elements?

I know very little about the books (just things I've read online over the years), but I liked the trailer. It looks like it will be an entertaining, action packed movie.

This looks great. Very different, structurally, from the novel, but that's not a bad thing by any means.

August can't get here fast enough.

I know very little about the series, but the trailer looks interesting, although it felt a bit light in comparison to the heavily complex nature I've heard about the series. Is that because the trailer is only showing a small glimpse or has the film simplified the story structure to a degree?

I'm another one with no real experience with the series, but the trailer was pretty cool. I definitely look forward to seeing more.

So, big fan of the novels. And I'm totally cool with adaptations being different. But there is some stuff in here that is so far from the novel, that I really don't know what to think. It looks beautiful though.

What is there in the trailer that strikes you as being "so far from the novel"?

Don't forget this is a kinda sequel, so things are going to play out differently than they did in the books.
When they called this a sequel online, it got me curious so I read about how the series ended on Wikipedia,
so now I'm wondering would Roland know how things played out in the books or would his memory have been reset when he walked through the doorway?

This looks great. I am glad there is a difference from the books because the books are so rooted in the history of King's own novels. It also works in the context of the story. It would be a waste to reduce the original story into only three movies--kind of like The Hobbit in reverse. Book IV could easily be a movie unto its own. As could Book V.

From what we've seen in the trailer though, this could easily be just the early parts of the movie. If one were to break the series into three movies then either IV or V would just have to be eliminated entirely, or Book IV summarized in Flashbacks.

I haven't finished the series, but my understanding is that Roland having the Horn of Eld does allow him to retain his memories.

My favorite part was just seeing him quickly load the bullets as was often mentioned in the books (the one by one scene not the bit with the speedloaders at the end).

The tone seems different, though that might just be the trailer, Roland wasn't exactly the shiny hero with a heart of gold. The books deal with Roland's obsession with The Dark Tower and it led him to do some questionable things.

Hmm. Even if they did 'lighten' Roland a bit, I'm not sure that that truly indicates that the film is moving far afield from the novels, particularly given the fact that it's meant to be a "sequel" to them and is retelling their story in a new way. To each their own, though.

Well, some pretty big differences in how and when Roland came to our world, basicly. Also, the flashy gunbelts are a bit weird to me, especially in book two ammo is a huge problem, and some kinda high-tech gunbelt is definatly NOT something that gunslingers have. The whole idea of having so many bullits would insanely weird to Roland. So it's a part of the worldbuilding that feels totally weird to me right now.

I am keeping that in mind.

For those wondering about the Horn Of Eld and Roland's memories....SPOILERS!!!: It's been several years but from what I remember his memory is wiped out entirely. It is each time he reaches the tower. There are a few moments of horrific realization, as he realizes he's done this time after time and is being sent back to the beginning. Not all the way but back to where he was in the desert at the beginning of the first book. But the memories fade quickly and he sets out again, completely oblivious about what happened in the preceding books, after the man in black.

Okay, I read the first three books in the late 80's, but never got past that. My little brother kept up with the series faithfully and he was a bit down on the ending, which I know the basics of. I don't know that I'll ever get around to reading the rest of the books, so did they ever say "why" he was repeating the loop? What was the deal with that?

I have mixed feelings on the movie only because the books, especially the first one, painted such a vivid picture. The glowing guns are especially weird as he just had regular old guns.
