The Dark Knight in contention for the Best Picture Oscar?

There has been plenty of talk of Heath Ledger being nominated for (and winning) the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but now there appears to be some talk that the film itself may actually have a chance. See for yourself.

What do you think The Dark Knight's chances are for a Best Picture nod?

Oh, Christ, not this thread again. I think we've had it four times ever since the DVD was released. :p

It should get a nod, it should win but it won't even get a mention. The Oscars get less important every year and the less people watching it or caring about it proves it.

Indeed. It'll just go to some artsy crap no ones seen or heard of before.

You mean SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE? I'm getting sick to my somach hearing how it's already the greatest movie ever. They should try to release it it more then 600 theaters so people can actually see it!

If movies like Ghost and A Few Good Men can get nominated (and Titanic can win!!!!!), I don't see why Dark Knight can't get at least a nomination.

Looking at this from another perspective: The ratings for the Oscars have been slipping year after year, might they decide that nominating such a high profile movie could get them ratings?

Well of course when the nominees are a bunch of art house mainstays that are released a month before the awards with little or no advertising. I can't tell you, outside of a few alternative weekly movie critics, who knows what Slumdog Millioniare is. Sounds like some inde band of the moment.

The Oscars are an industry award show anyway. Didn't they use to celebrate it in a banquet setting? They should go back to that and show it on cable and save some cash.

Well, excuse me! I've been busy at boot camp since the DVD came out so I haven't really noticed or cared. :p

Are you back for a while, Emh? By the way, while you were gone, Anne Hathaway trounced Yvonne Strahovski to win the 2008 GBOW title.

I'm sort of back. I'm going to be very busy in school for my job in the Navy, so I'll pop in when I can but it won't be like before. Too bad about the 2008 GBOW title. I don't like either of the finalists. :p

It is the 2nd highest grossing film of all time, what the HELL does it matter what the stupid Oscars have to say? We have spoken, screw 'em.

In other words, real life trumps online time-wasting and procrastination? :)

If you look up "December Madness 2008," you can see the events that occurred, including the infamous tie.

So, what...you're suggesting they should rig the voting?

Not like it would be anything new.;)

No, but I'm saying that, looking at it from burely a business standpoint, that giving Dark Knight a nomination makes sense.

Since I just saw it for the first time this weekend, I'd have to say...NO...

Ledger as the Joker was massively good, but the movie was long enough to be two films and lost points because of that.

IMHO

As opposed to Return of the King? The Oscars seemed to love that movie and it certainly was not a short film.
