The Dark Crystal Prequel Series Coming To Netflix

It was a tiny little indie thing, but there is also Yamasong: March of the Hollows which is all puppets, and features the voices of Nathan Fillion, Abigail Breslin, Whoopi Goldberg, George Takei, Peter Weller, and Ed Asner.

Wow, I'm surprised I never heard about that film. Looks fascinating.

I actually first heard about it years ago and had been following the production off and on since then. It finally came out earlier this year, but I haven't had a chance to actually watch it yet. I plan on renting the digital version on Amazon some time soon.

So, how much of the Gelfling genocide is going to be up on screen?

The writing is pretty much on the wall from the original film.

For all intents and purposes, this is a Holocaust prequel. Which is interesting for what is, technically, a children's series.

I recently re-watched the original film, 35 years since my last viewing. It was a beautiful looking piece (stunningly so, when it came to the Skeksis council sections), but the tiny sliver of the world. its mythos and the characters, it showed really does undermine it.

Having never explored the larger world, since built in the comics etc, I hope that the series helps add the depth to the original it always desperately needed

Hugo - mmmmmmmmmm?

I think this is going to be long enough before the movie that we won't actually be seeing the Gelflings get wiped out.

Is it weird that I'm more looking forward to seeing all of the behind the scenes footage of how they pulled this off, than the actual show itself?

I imagine it took a while for he Skeksis to exterminate the Gelflings. They first need to make the Gartham, which are their shock troops, since there are only a dozen or so Skeksis at this time (ten at the start of the film). Plus this Darkening has turned the countryside around the Crystal into a wasteland. In this current show, their is still green grass, trees, and flowing water. The War lasted over a hundred years as it started around 800 years after the Crystal was cracked, and Jen and Kira were still relatively young when they became the last of their kind reuniting in the 1,000th year after the Crystal was Cracked.

Age of Resistance seems to be the prelude to the Gartham War.

Anyone senses a Demolition Man vibe with the idea that the Skeksis were benevolent acting just like Cocteau from that movie and Rian is like Edgar Friendly who can see there is greed, corruption, abuse of power and all that to the so called benevolent leader and the gelflings are like the scraps from that movie?

I read that last night, and it's got me even more excited, because they tend to be pretty hard to please at Io9.

True, but it varies with each writer. Beth Elderkin is certainly the one I trust the most among them.

Take a listen to the gorgeous main title theme!

I'm afraid I don't like it much. It doesn't have a clear melody -- it's mostly just two back-and-forth notes very richly orchestrated. It's well-done wallpaper, rather than a real theme. I got bored with it halfway through and stopped listening. I'd have preferred it if they'd kept Trevor Jones's unforgettable motifs from the original.

That's a silly complaint because this prequel is a television series and is set before Gelfling massacre and Thra became barren. Of course it's going to be bigger.

And even a prequel is still a sequel; even if it's set earlier, it's still a subsequent piece of the narrative and builds on what the earlier work established. So there's no reason to expect it to be smaller.

Netflix also likely gave the show a comparatively larger budget than the original movie ever got (in adjusted dollars). It makes perfect sense that they would “go bigger” in every respect possible.
