I figured I'd start a decidedly non-nerdy thread for a change (Wait, nerds don't dance?)

I personally love dancing so I wondered how the rest of you feel about it.
This is about all kinds of dancing, really. I've been doing ballroom/latin dancing for years now and I just love it (well, apart from Viennese Waltz that just gets me all dizzy).

But hey, I'm also not opposed to some random (sexy :o) dancing in a club.

What are your experiences with dancing?
Did you ever learn ballroom dancing? Latin? There's also a special Argentine Tango scene in most bigger cities. Did your moms make you attend a dancing course when you were teenagers? :p Did you hate it?! Did you hate/love any dances in particular?

Do you ever go dancing? If so... is it actual dances or the famous, intricate club dance we call "grinding"? :p
 
I invented couch dancing. It is all dancing from the waist up while sitting on the couch. This came about one Xmas when there had been a bit too much in the punch and now the whole family does couch dancing. It is FAB and you can usually get even the most embarrassed person to partake.

I like throwing myself around the room like a lunatic regular old dancing too. I have no shyness.
 
I used to attend Scottish dancing lessons as a child, and took part in team competitions. Plus, every Christmas our school would teach "social dancing" as part of PE. Like most things at that age, I thought of it as a chore, but these days I can see the fun and social benefits of it all. Take me to a ceilidh today and I will (try to) give you the time of your life. :)

In terms of non-formal dancing, such as at parties or at Uni or in the club, I'm very shy. I usually wait until everyone else is too drunk to care, notice or remember. At that point of the night, I sometimes finding myself owning the dance floor. :D

I want to do more dancing now. Sometimes, when I'm alone, and a catchy beat reaches my ear, I can't help myself. I've never tried ballroom or Latin dancing, but I wouldn't say no...
 
I used to know a lot of line dances - Louisiana, Dallas Freez, Thunderfoot, Texas Star, Tush Push, Copperhead, maybe a couple of others (though never the Achy Breaky). But since our local honky-tonk closed down years ago, I have no opportunity to do them. :( I do still remember the Copperhead though.
 
I love dancing. There's always great music at Indian weddings, and I like club dancing but I hate clubs. So these days I mostly dance around my apartment instead. When I was younger I did years of a classical Indian dance called kathak and did performances and such. I really enjoyed it and I think there were a lot of benefits to it. If I ever have kids, I'd definitely encourage them to dance in any form.
 
I am also very ashamed to admit that I will, at the slightest provocation, do the Macarena. :alienblush:

(actually I just like the song, really, much more than the dance, which looks a lot like swimming)
 
I love that we're getting so many different types of dancing here! I mean... couch dancing! :D

They're just a little shy when dancing in a club... I need to explain my "anything goes on the dancefloor" attitude a little better when dancing with Germans. :cool:

See, line dancing is something I have next to no experience with. It's just not a big deal here. Is this some American thing in general? Or a regional thing?
I'm imagining guys with cowboy hats and boots. :p

I looked for kathak videos on youtube since I wasn't familiar with it. Looks fascinating. How did you learn it? Just family teaching each other or are there actual Indian cultural clubs or whatever that teach it in the US?
And I so agree on encouraging kids to dance. It's fun, it's good for your coordination and health, and it's social. :)

Unfortunantly my two left feet prevent me from dancng, though I suppose all that means is I need to find a partner with two right feet. :p
 
@{ Emilia }: Yeah, line dancing is pretty much a US thing. Or at least it was, back in the 90's. It's not quite as popular now.

Line dancing is very American and more of a western thing, though I'm familiar with it. My sister and I learned kathak from a teacher that travelled around the suburbs. It was difficult to find a kathak teacher because most young girls study a different type of dance. My dance teacher was such a character that we still talk about him to this day. When he taught us, he was just starting out but now he has basically a whole school of students and became quite popular in the Chicagoland area.

He'd also sometimes coordinate other dance numbers for us to Hindi songs and I've done other Indian dances for fun as well, such as dandyia (dancing with sticks!), a Bengali folk type dance, and bhangra. Great fun, all of it.
 
When I was going to college in Iowa, some friends introduced me to what they called "boot-scootin'" ... which consisted of going to the Dubuque County Fairgrounds every Thursday night for line dancing. We wound up going every Thursday for something like three years. It was always a lot of fun, even though I really can't stand country music. Line dancing is one of those things where you have to dance like no one else is watching (because, honestly, it's so incredibly silly).

That was a long time ago.

Outside of that, I think the last time I did any dancing was at my wedding, which was ... also a long time ago.

I voted too shy, but part of that due to not being able to handle clubs thanks to sensory issues (mainly visual). That being said, I'm always singing along to music, especially in the car. The one form of dancing I'd love to learn is belly dancing, but I haven't been able to find any lessons close enough to home.
