The damn lens flares!

Every scene from this movie seems to have two different lens flares! :wtf: I mean what the fuck? I am scared now that this great movie (deduced from the clips I have seen, not final judgment) will be ruined for me at least from the blinding lens flares it seems to have. Would it have been so hard to not have lens flares at every scene? Some flares are there for over a second! I know Abrams likes some gimmicks but come on! Why put those unnecessary flares? The scene between Kirk, Spock and Scotty on the bridge is specially hard to watch. I'd had to close my eyes rapidly quite a few times and that's from watching it on a monitor. I shudder to think how it would be in the movie theater! :klingon:

just make sure your wearing sunglasses when you see the film.;)

It's really a non-issue unless you go into the film looking for them. 99% of the audience won't give them a second thought.

I have to admit they bothered me some, especially during scenes on the bridge. But the thing is, I'd already read complaints about them so it could be that unconsciously I was looking for them. :rommie:

The flares are there to remind us that this is literally a flashy new Star Trek, not the stodgy, boring, talky old show your dad used to watch. No doubt, the movie is also quite loud--note the sound effect that accompanies the opening and closing of doors: it sounds like the phaser from TSFS.

I notice them in the clips set on the bridge but on a big screen it won't be a problem and am sure we will not notice them once am too busy  over the movie as I watch it ;)

The only lens flare that irritated me was in Transformers during the battle in the city when Megan Fox and Shia Labeouf were staring at each other, and Megan's face was completely block with the flare for 2 seconds. That was overdoing it.

Exactly. Its only us nity picky fans that will notice them. My other half didnt even notice them in the clips and trailers until i pointed them out to her.

So, its a fair bet that average Joe movie goer will not notice anything.

Hell, i wont be paying attention to them anyway. Besides, i went into an Apple store the other day and the harsh lighting and glares didnt bother me.

Good point, makes sense.

Not to mention the updated scanner/viewer beeps we hear in the clip on the bridge . Brilliant, but not just subtle as we all first suspected (Classic effects used in the background that you may notice) they are loud and prominant.

The door hisses are a staple of Trek lore as much as communicator pips and the penis rock. They way they have done the sound it has a subtle but noticable TOS sound, but at the same time completely new.

I saw Mission Impossible 3 a few weeks back, it would have been an OK movie if Tom Cruise wouldn't have been in it (I swear he's only been a good actor in Tropic Thunder), and that film has a lot of lense flares and I've got to admit, I hardly noticed it, and when I did I thought it was used in a great position.

I think if you dwell on something like this, you're looking to not like the film, which is purely idiotic for someone to do (no offence). I mean, if you're going to dwell on things like that why don't you rant about the uniforms being a slightly different colour?

Hey...it doesn't mean he's a hater...his avatar is from the movie and he said he's very excited about it so don't do that thing where we think if someone complains about something that they are against the new movie.

I will thank you for not reverting to that hackneyed thing of replying to something like this with the straw man's " OMFG THEY RAPED ME WITH THE CANNON!!!!!!!11"
Even my damn avatar has a goddamn lens flare!

Lens flare does seem pretty out of place in the Trek universe since it's a consequence of inferior optics.

JJ talks about it
If you've seen a single second of Abrams' Star Trek you know the film is stuffed with audience blinding lens flashes. J.J. Abrams admitted he got a bit carried away, but explained why they're there. At the Star Trek press conference this weekend, J.J. Abrams addressed the press and when it was io9's turn, we asked him the one thing that had been plaguing us since the first shiny Trek clip was released:
I'm curious to hear more about why you decided to use so many lens flares, and exactly when you decided to use them?
[Smiles] I don't know what you're talking about. [Laughs] I'm kidding. I know what you're saying with the lens flares. It was one of those things... I wanted a visual system that felt unique. I know there are certain shots where even I watch and think, "I know that's ridiculous, that was too many." But I love the idea that the future was so bright it couldn't be contained in the frame.
The flares weren't just happening from on-camera light sources, they were happening off camera, and that was really the key to it. I want [to create] the sense that, just off camera, something spectacular is happening. There was always a sense of something, and also there is a really cool organic layer thats a quality of it. They were all done live, they weren't added later. There are something about those flares, especially in a movie that can potentially be very sterile and CG and overly controlled. There is something incredibly unpredictable and gorgeous about them. It is a really fun thing. Our DP would be off camera with this incredibly powerful flashlight aiming it at the lens. It became an art because different lenses required angles, and different proximity to the lens. Sometimes, when we were outside we'd use mirrors. Certain sizes were too big... literally, it was ridiculous. It was like another actor in the scene....
We had two cameras, so sometimes we had two different spotlight operators. When there was atmosphere in the room, you had to be really careful because you could see the beams. So it was this ridiculous, added level of pain in the ass, but I love... [looking at] the final cut, [the flares] to me, were a fun additional touch that I think, while overdone, in some places, it feels like the future is that bright.
So now you know, and honestly after hearing his reasoning and his admission that maybe he got a little carried away in some scenes — like the above Spock meets Scottie moment — I can see what he's saying, especially about keeping it from looking too greenscreen or fake.
Also, Abrams touched on what he had to cut from the movie and will be appearing on the Trek DVD:
What's going to be on the DVD and BluRay, we heard something about the character Uncle Frank?
[Kirk's] Stepfather and young Kirk have a scene, there is a Nero prison scene, young Spock as a baby, and more... there are a couple scenes that were brought out of the movie. Some things, like that prison sequence, just confound the audience. Every time we screened the movie for a group, that sequence threw them, even though it had some of my favorite design in the entire movie. The wardrobe, the location, some of the visual effects were really fun. But you know it was better without it, when we cut it.

Saw the film last night. Great stuff! Noticed perhaps three lens flares.

I accidentally had to watch ST VI at a sneak preview wearing prescription sunglasses because I left my glasses case at home. Wear your sunnies if you're overly-worried.

It looks like in that quote a few posts up that JJ said the Nero in the Klingon prison scene was cut...but will be in the DVD.

As long as there isn't too much shaky-cam, I'm OK with the flares. It's the shaky-cam I can't stand. Makes me seasick.
