"The CW Is Going Girly, And I Don't Like It..."

Appropos of nothing, but I must agree with this editorial on how irrelevant the CW is becoming. Reaper fans should be tickled by it. Gossip Girl fans won't be. :shifty: He's right that the network will be off the air after Supernatural ends if they don't change strategies quickly.

CW's Girly, by Steve West

HA! I don't have any plans on watching the network after SPN's swan song next season either. :rommie: Poor little old Reaper isn't going to make it that far with it premiering against Idol and getting buried.

It's funny how I'm wrong about the CW right up until a show someone else enjoys gets in trouble.

I believe Sunday's CW fast nationals rating was a 0.2/1. It's essentially just another cable network now. You can't put it in the same category at ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox.

The CW (and the WB & UPN before it) could never be in the same category as ABC, NBC, CBS & FOX.

I don't even watch Smallville anymore, unless its via DVD box set.

I think the WB had a good run. It could have been considered up there in Fox's category (for a short while). It was a big mistake for the WB to merge with UPN.

All I know is that as soon as Supernatural and Smallville are done, the CW will be all but a distant memory for me.

pretty much the same here, its the CW choice to go girly, I dont really care if it does or not.

was watching an ITV 2 promo called "what are ITV 2 girls made of" a clue not Sugar & Spice & featuring clips from Gossip Girl, I thought my TV had picked up the CW.

ITV 2 has always been a channel aimed at the female audience, though I have to admit I thought the same thing when I saw that ad.

I wonder if ITV 2 feels the same way about Supernatural that theCW does?

and yeah I know ITV2 has always been aimed at women, and that is true of the CW as well really.

but a "what are theCW girls made of" promo could work for them

Probably not, it's usually one of their top 5 shows if not their number 1 show. They usually do decent promos for it, and put it up against tough competition like Lost and Being Human.

The writer hits it on the mark. The only shows I like on CW are Supernatural and Reaper. Smallville lost me a long time ago and even my 14-year old son has admitted that Smallville is boring, repetitive drama that never changes.

Indeed. The WB actually produced several recognizable "hits" during its time - Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Dawson's Creek, Felicity, Gilmore Girls, 7th Heaven. UPN produced...uh... VOY and ENT. Why the two agreed to merge is something I've yet to understand. The WB actually had a few talented people at the network. UPN had no one. Even more puzzling is how former UPN execs were given the reigns to The CW. Dawn Ostroff should have been fired upon UPN's demise, not given control of the new network.

According to some of our posters from Britain over at sn.tv, Supernatural has hit number one on ITV2 once before. It outperformed Idol that week. It usually ranks in the top 5. It performs way better than Gossip Girl.

The CW hasn't come up with a legitimate hit (even by CW standards) of its own since the merger. Top Model is from UPN; One Tree Hill outperforms Gossip Girl on Mondays, and Smallville/Supernatural on Thursdays do better than the other scripted shows on the network.

Looking at BARB figures it's been number 1 4 out of the last 5 weeks they have numbers for. And the week it wasn't number 1 on ITV2 it was number 1 on ITV2 +1

Wow. I didn't realize it was doing that well on ITV2. I'm not surprised, though. The oped author has it right. GoGi won't last because it's faddish, while SPN has a great mythology going and it's got great bromance. There's something about a best friends/brother dynamic that always appeals if the actors have got the chemistry. It never goes out of style.
