I watched this nice film last night on TCM. A decent and funny little film from late '50s or early '60s with Glen Ford and a very young Ron Howard.

How refreshing to see a real life situation played out in a reasonably believable way. The kid is energetic and smart yet without being obnoxious and a little smartass you want to kick across the room. And Glen Ford's father figure is intelligent and capable yet isn't perfect and can make mistakes without being a doofus and inept idiot like most dads portrayed today. It was touching and I liked the humour throughout.

More believable that the "mean" lady and Ford's girlfriend isn't actually bad, but just not good with kids.

And Shirley Jones as the neighbour and deceased wife's best friend was to die for.

Good movie.

I actually haven't seen the movie, but I grew up on the Bill Bixby show. Absolutely wonderful.

I remember the series somewhat, but I don't recall seeing the original film before now. And from what I remember I like the film better.

Interesting cast change, though, because in the film the housekeeper Mrs. Livingston was a caucasian woman while in the series she was Asian if I recall correctly.

Yes. Between The Music Man and The Courtship of Eddie's Father, I fell head over heels for Shirley Jones as a kid.

I always thought Glenn Ford was the perfect choice for Pa Kent in the Reeves version of Superman. Just a terrific actor who always came across incredibly strong but compassionate.

And Ron Howard was spot on as Eddie. I love the last sequence in the movie involving the phone call and his reactions.

Loved the TV series, too.

^^ I loved Eddie asking his dad what the numbers were beside each woman's name in a magazine. Glenn Ford isn't really paying attention until Eddie says the number "40" indicating a woman's breast size, then Ford is suddenly paying attention.

This is a cute movie, and I like this role for Glenn Ford. He was a strong actor in so many different types of pictures. It's nice to see him in a lighter sort of role than he usually played.

He was much like Jimmy Stewart in being a generally soft spoken and plain speaking man who was easy-going and compassionate yet courageous and tough-as-nails underneath.

Harry Nillson's theme for the TV show remains unforgettable.

I always thought Glenn Ford was the perfect choice for Pa Kent in the Reeves version of Superman.

That would be the "Reeve version"...a distinction that is worth making for obvious reasons.
