The Cost of Living

Willieck

Commander
Red Shirt
Just this watched this again. I have a feeling that this episode might not be liked by some but it is one of my favourites. I love the interplay between Lwaxana Troi and Alexander and the holodeck programme has me smiling from beginning to end. "The Higherrr the Fewerrr" Love it.

It never shows up in any fan's Top 10 and it is indeed a winner, an effective character-driven episode with liberal doses of humor. Episodes like this, The Perfect Mate, The Outcast and The Host are examples of the solid dramatic work accomplished on TNG but without the prominent action or sci-fi element they rarely get mentioned.

This isn't the "he's only sixty" one, right?

In that case, I like it.

Oh yeah, now that I remember, this one had some moments. I liked when Worf said, "We just sit here?"

And that shot of Mr. Homn towering over Alexander when he opens the door is outstanding.

I like the absurdity juxtaposed with the charm. Lwaxana was always a favorite of mine. I think TNG won an Emmy (or was at least nominated) for the hair/makeup/costumes/something-like-that in this episode, right?

Anyway, this episode is why I love that Lwaxana is called the Auntie Mame of the Galaxy. The moniker suits her. :)

I agree, especially about the last. She is very Mame-like.

And I totally forgot there was a technobabble side plot.

I find that when I rewatch Lwaxana episodes, I usually skip through the scenes that she's not in.

I watched this one recently and I gotta say, I still don't get it. Just what was this episode about? It has always felt odd to me, maybe because of the heavy focus on guest characters and a subplot that doesn't connect AT ALL to the main story. There's not even a scene (à la "New Ground") in which the threat to the ship affects Lwaxana and Alexander. Pointless would be my word for it.

I don't really think there is anything to "get". I enjoy watching it; it's as simple as that. I think everyone agrees that the subplot is pants.

Hmm, if the point of the episode is to do nothing and mean nothing, it sounds more like a Seinfeld episode than a Star Trek.... I dunno. I had the impression they had run out of ideas at this point and were coasting on a Majel Barrett guest appearance.

I Love this episode. It's definitely a light hearted episode, so if you don't like that, you wont find this episode particularly interesting. I think the scenes on the holodeck are really cool. whoever handled the creative art work really got to go all out in this episode. lots of funny ideas on the holodeck. I thought it was a nice change of pace to see more of the civilian life we always hear about.

Some of my friends can't stand lwaxana but I think they need to get over themselves and enjoy a hilarious character. I loved pretty much all the episodes she was on.

One of my friends and I sometimes quote "The Hiiigheerrrr, the fewerrrrr" to each other to get a laugh out of one another.

Yes, Yes, YES!!!

I've always loved Majel in this role. She made the ultimate "mother from hell".

And I always wondered how she pulled it off so well considering she was nothing like her character.

I think MB was a highly under rated actress. Of course Lwaxana was vastly different from Nurse Chapel and that in itself showed some of her range. But there were a couple of scenes in Half a Life and especially in Dark Page where she showed she really did have some acting chops.
