Just rewatched this with my wife and the film is actually really intense, well done action, and some pretty nasty deaths. I credit it for striking a good balance between historical authenticity, and comedy. Oliver Platt is hilarious, Curry is top notch and creepy to boot, and the movie is quite quotable.
Here's one of my favorite scenes...
(The guard's captain arrives at a building, finding his fellow men tied up, while Athos and Aramis are seated quietly.)
Captain: "What is this?"
Athos: "We were having a private party, celebrating the demise of the Musketeers. Go away."
Aramis: "Athos, is that any way to greet our guest? Don't be shy, come in! Your friends have been expecting you."
Captain: "You're under arrest."
Athos (smirking): "On who's authority?"
Rochefort (entering from behind): "Mine."
Aramis (smiling): "Ah, hello again, Cyclops." (to Athos) "Let's see - when did we last have the pleasure of his company?"
Athos: "I believe it was the day he was kicked out of the Musketeers. 'Conduct unbecoming a Musketeer' - that was the charge, was it not?"
Rochefort: "You should know. Three of you stood against me."
Aramis: "It was the least we could do."
"You are hereby ordered to surrender your tunics and your commissions at once. You can of course, becoming outlaws, hunted men. But why not come along quietly...for old time's sake?"
(Suddenly, the chandalier above breaks, and falls down toward the guards, who are crushed. Rochefort barely escapes, and Porthos is shown on top of it.)
Porthos: "Did I miss anyone?"
Aramis: "Congratulations, Porthos. You brought down the house."
Porthos: "Drat. I was trying to hit Rochefort."
Athos (approaching Rochefort, and drawing his sword): "You go back and you tell the Cardinal, that we will continue to perform our sworn duty which is to protect the King, and we will use any means within our power to fight him."
Rochefort: "Bold words...I look forward to ramming them down your throat."
(Athos chuckles, while Porthos steps forward.)
Porthos: "Rochefort?...Isn't that a smelly kind of a cheese?"
