The Constitution Class Starships

Nimitz CO

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Before I start this project I would like to engage any fan interest in it first. Well Here it goes.

My friend and me were toying with the idea of writing a historical perspective on the Constitution Class Starships to include a complete history of the development of the class as well as the complete history of each of the 12 ships built by Starfleet including upgrades and refits. With possible schematics to go along with the histories.

If your interested, or have any ideas, please speak up.

I think at least 14 were built; several were destroyed, including the Intrepid, the Constellation, and the Excalibur.

I think you might be right on that, what I was planning on doing was focusing first on the original 12 to be put into service, and then going onto the replacement starships the were introduced to replace any losses. Sort of like an appendix.

Some of the Constitutions had registries lower than the USS Constitution (NCC-1700). The Constellation, for example, was NCC-1017.

I came up with a theory to explain the lower numbering: perhaps the Constellation was originally of another class, but retained its number when refit to Constitution class, just like the Enterprise retained its number when refit in TMP.

Yes I agree the numbering system never did make sense. One theroy out there was from Matt Jefferies that stated the numbers on the vessels translated this way; the first 2 digits ie "17" signifies the 17th class of starship designed and produced by Starfleet and that the last 2 digits were the build numbers for example the class leader USS Constitution NCC-1700, then the Enterprise NCC-1701. What blew that theroy out of the water was the episode "The Doomsday Machine" when the model makers used an AMT/ERTL model kit for the USS Constellation and all they did was simply rearrange the decals from the kit to reflect a different starship, hence 1017. Since then, it's been fair game.

I always figured that they just used an old number from a previous ship, regardless of class. Later, they developed the system of adding the letter after the number if they wanted to keep the same registry number, such as 1701-A.
What the Hell. It kept me satisfied with the out of whack registries.
