The Commonwealth Games and Safety in India

For those people who live in a country that is part of the British Commonwealth - would most likely know about the safety issues in India at the moment, as the Commonwealth Games are due to start next month in New Delhi.

So what do you think will happen?

I'm hoping all problems can be fixed in the week or so. But I don't know if I was an athlete ...how I would react. Probably just stay in the village and compete (as the Australians are planning)

^ I think there are a lot of concerns regarding the athletes' village; I've seen hygiene, plumbing, and electrical problems cited.

I know at least a few members of the Canadian team have announced they won't be attending, and that some of the team has delayed their departure for India.

The whole thing looks like its a shamble

The Indians have had 8 years to build the Athletes Village but it seems the most of the work didn't start until 2008. With less than 2 weeks to go they can't guarantee that the village will be ready in time. The athletes should be moving into the village within the next couple of days so that they have time to get over jet lag and to acclimatise to the weather.

I think that the security issues are an even bigger concern especially since the two Taiwanese tourists were shot.

It seems that the Organising Committee Secretary General Lalit Bhanot has upset his fellow Indians by stating that the Western standard of hygiene may differ from the Indian concept of hygiene.

Indians are saying that they are less conscious about hygiene as compared to a westerner and if a loo is dirty, no one can call it clean.

Still seems to be a shambles. The warm-up pool is linked to illnesses among swimmers, weigh-ins were werecked by incorrect scales, athletes pulling out, crowds of 30 and below to some events.

The future of the Commonwealth Games has been questioned for a while; this could be the final straw.

^ I think it will affect India's chance at the Olympics more in 2020. But I am enjoying them at the moment.

i have wondered if the terror plans for europe are actually a feint and the real attack is planned for the commonwealth games.
