The Classic/Retro Pop Culture Thread

They also show a picture from what appears to be the 2000 series in the 9/10 schedule that I linked to in my post. It's definitely not the 1950s series (which I didn't know about until now).

If you watched H&I in the morning and then switch to MeTV in the evening you could have a whole day of "comic book" retro TV.
Ah, good point! Too bad most of us here seem to have only one channel or the other.

Oh, yeah, I kind of remember that series being on the air, but I've never seen it.

Been watching the Sunday morning political shows lately, but was surprised to find that they're still running It's About Time as well.

September 17-18 on DECADES: Ironside returns.

^^ Is that the first time they've repeated a binge? Must have gotten good ratings.

My Mother, The Car is legendary, but I don't think I've ever seen it. I'm pretty sure I have Antenna, so I'll see if I can track it down. Same with It's About Time. I was able to download some episodes from YouTube, but I'd rather be able to see it on TV.

No, remember when they seemed to be doing That Girl routinely? Or my reaction when they brought back The Love Boat? More likely a continuation, Ironside was a long-running 1-hour series.

El Rey is giving rare cartoons on Saturday: Journey. To the Center of the Earth, Return to the Planet of the Apes and I am the Greatest: Muhammad Ali.

^^ I used to watch that Journey To The Center Of The Earth when I was a kid (assuming it's the 60s version and not something that came later).

Ah, that's right, I do remember now.

Cool! Journey is an early Filmation series that I've never seen, so I'm certainly going to check that out. Indeed, it was their first half-hour series (as opposed to several short segments per half-hour) and their first series that wasn't based on DC comics (aside from a 1963 syndicated show on which they were animation subcontractors but not the producers). So that's a key bit of Filmation history.

I've never heard of this channel, so I assume I don't have it.

Heck, I never knew I had it until I heard of it. The TV in a computer repair shop was showing it while I was waiting for my laptop to be ready, and I was wondering what it was, so I looked it up and hey, there it was on my cable lineup. There are just so many channels on cable that it's hard to be aware of all of them.

I think El Ray is the station that had the Dusk To Dawn series. Last time I checked I only had it in HD. The main thing I remember about the Journey to the Center of the Earth cartoon is the buttons popping off the woman's shirt in the magnetic storm. :rommie: But somehow it's connected in my mind to the Fantastic Voyage cartoon that was on around the same time (CMDF!). I'm not sure why. Maybe just because of the similar style. I haven't seen either one since the early 70s at the latest.

Yesterday was Three Stooges day on Decades (it might even be Three Stooges week). Apparently, there's a nine-part documentary series on the Stooges narrated by Son of Moe. I had the day off, so I got to watch a couple and it was pretty good.

I also noticed another retro channel called Grit, which is apparently another Western channel. They were showing a Zane Grey Theater marathon. I've heard good things about the show, but I don't think I've ever seen it.

Grit has replaced Encore Westerns as my overnight insomnia remedy. An old horse opera can put me to sleep in a matter of minutes. Love 'em. :D

I occasionally find myself in the mood for a Western and Encore has some good old stuff. I'm not sure what Grit has besides Zane Gray, but I look forward to catching some episodes if I get the chance-- anthologies of that period were generally of good quality.

^Grit has Laramie, which is generally a pretty good oater and is also on Starz (formerly Encore) Westerns, but I don't have a good feel for how edited-down they are. I watched some High Chapparals on, I think, Ion channel, and no kidding it was about 40 minutes worth of show.

I have been watching some Zane Gray Theater on Grit, too. and so far they are quite good.

High Chaparral was pretty good. I used to watch that on Encore Westerns a few years ago, and they show their stuff uncut (I think). I don't recall ever seeing Laramie.

Decades will be running Trek-themed programming all day Thursday in commemoration of the 50th...largely the same stuff that H&I is showing tomorrow.

It's pretty boilerplate stuff but you can see the emergence of the house style coming through. Plus, Ted Knight is classic in any early TV animation.

I found Return to Planet of the Apes more interesting. The storytelling is relatively sophisticated for cartoons of the time even if the limited animation is quite...limited. The art isn't bad though and there's some interesting use of shadow and panning to compensate, to a degree anyway. Sometimes it comes off more as a motion comic than animation.

And General Urko sounds like Fred Flintstone which provides some unintentional amusement.

It's also good to know good quality copies of these shows still exist. (I see Apes is on Hulu as well)

And next Saturday, Svengoolie will be showing "The Cage," presumably with other material since it's not movie length. It's going to be kind of a pain for me because the local affiliate delays Svengoolie till 11. Although 10oclock on a Saturday night is not the most convenient time either.
