Spoilers The Church on Ruby Road grade and discussion thread

How do you rate The Church on Ruby Road?

My guess who is dropping Ruby off... Ruby.

Possibly, but looks too tall. Also, alien DNA stuff aside, Ruby needs another set of chromosome pairs, so either her Dad bonks her or.... yeah, this is getting ickier than River Song growing up to fancy her Mum's best mate (who her Mum nearly shagged).

Although, the voiceover saying that Ruby was the daughter of whoever dropped her off MIGHT be fibbing or wrong.

Maybe Ruby's parents are from the future, and that's why there's no record of them. But then she ends up being the one to take herself as a baby back to the church on Ruby Road, otherwise Important Things never would have happened.

Paradox - she has no parents.

Ruby is the Timeless Child, who grows up to be the Master when she's raised by Tecteun, so the Doctor stole her and chameleon arched her to have her live as a human, but then Ruby finds the Fob Watch with all the memories she avoided and turns into Missy, half Master, half, um, Not-Quite-As-Evil Master. Since the Toymaker was nonspecific about the timing, it's revealed the gold tooth Master is the one from the TV movie. Not Eric Roberts, the one who got zapped a cage.

Quite enjoyable and fun. The only real negative, and this something I felt about the 60th anniversary specials with Tennant is that they are a bit too fast paced. I'm not saying I'm against fast pace, indeed I'll be the first to complain when something is too slow. But maybe a chance to catch one's breath while watching would be nice. But whatevs, I liked this all the same. Ncuti Gatwa is the Doctor and Ruby looks like a promising companion.

The best part of the goblin musical number was left out of the YouTube preview, when the Doctor and Ruby show up and start singing themselves. I loved that bit.
No full series until May?
BTW, where is this May premiere coming from? I'm seeing that reported on other websites, and they cite the trailer, but I've watched the trailer five times now and see no reference to May at all.

If that is the case, meh. A bit disappointing we aren't going back to Easter premieres, but I'll cope.
RTD's specials have always just been fairly standard Doctor stories that take place on or around Christmas, whereas Moffat's specials were usually Christmas stories.
Even Moffat gave up on doing actual Christmas stories for his Christmas specials after Last Christmas. The Husbands of River Song, The Return of Doctor Mysterio and Twice Upon a Time are standard Doctor Who stories that only feature a Christmas scene each. And in the case of Twice Upon a Time they wait until the end to include the Christmas scene.

Dave Lister wants to whack you with a pool cue.

Plus, see my edit.

Well its funny the spoilers (which were 100% accurate) noted who her parents were and what happens but I guess it was cut from the episode. RTD plans to return to the plot in the series so I guess he filmed it and then decided to turn it into a bigger plot?

I didn’t watch the show go out live but watched it on iplayer and the trailer that followed the episode said May.

Ah, you see. Some of us don't read the spoilers.

Because they may be accurate, or they might not.

If they are, please don't raise them again here outside of tags.

Some of us like to have fun speculating.

If you're NOT speculating, make that plain.

The biggest mystery is who is Mrs Flood, what is she to Ruby, why does she know what a tardis is, and i wonder if she could have been the hand that picked up the gold tooth from the toy maker?

I quite enjoyed this special, easily Davies' best Christmas episode (albeit that's a low bar for me). There wasn't anything that really made me cringe, aside from the Goblin King (yuck).

I really liked the idea of the sky-faring, time-traveling, pirate goblins who feed on coincidences, chances, and bad luck. They're such a ridiculous notion that they fit in perfectly with Doctor Who, especially Davies' take on the show. I will enjoy seeing them again, whether or not they're connected to Ruby's larger story.

Speaking of whom, I love Ruby. I initially worried she would be another Rose but she is indeed quite different beyond the surface. Putting aside yet-another-mystery-companion trope, I love Ruby's story, how she fits into a larger family of foster children, and how she was the one who stuck around. I adore Carla and Cherry and I look forward to seeing more of them (which, of course, we will since this is Davies after all).

As for the mystery itself, I'm mildly curious about it. However, after so many companions tied into bigger mysteries, and I know I've been saying this for nearly two decades, I long for the days when The Doctor simply runs into a companion and they have grand adventures in all of time and space without a giant axe hanging over them. To be clear, I feel that this is the fault of all of the modern showrunners, although I think Chibnall did handle this the best...I just wish Yaz had been better utilized.

For all of the fanfare and "buzz" I saw in this forum about both the goblin song and the new sonic, I'm largely indifferent to both. The only thing that really stood out to me about the song was how the singer's voice just sounded like another human without any attempt to make her sound like a goblin (or rather non-human). And the sonic is still a magic wand even if it looks like a garage door opener now.

Spring can't come soon enough!

I would say The Runaway Bride is more fullfilling for me, as its seeing Tennant and Tate together for the first time, but this is one of his best for sure. And man, all four specials feel like RTD not only watched the Moffat episodes, but paid attention too.

Radio Times & Digital Spy websites, among others, say May 2024. But you know these websites, they post the first date they hear in hopes of "being first", then don't change it once it's been disproven.

Obviously May would be just great.

Well, that was a rush.

Pure, breathless, capital-letters FUN, which is exactly what I want for Christmas. Key to that? The all-singing, all-dancing, range-for-days force of nature that is Ncuti Gatwa. He IS the Doctor, & he makes me more excited about & engaged with Who than I've felt in a long time. So does the sheer production value; this episode looked gorgeous throughout.

Amused and confused by the Marvel-esque mid-credits sequence. No shortage of dangling threads to tantalise. Roll on May!

So far the Ruby and Anita Dobson set ups feel more Moffat than RTD
Mrs. Flood is Ruby's mother, has also travelled with a TARDIS, and may or may not also be the Mistress?

ETA: If we take her words in the episode at face value (which I don't), she hadn't seen a TARDIS before the Doctor went back to save Ruby, in fact her entire demeanour changed. If that's intended to be meaningful, and it doesn't coincide with her opening her fob watch at that point, it seems to contradict her being the Master.
