It is set in M-space. (Mavity, magic) My personal term, but I'm not enforcing copyright.
The Doctor is no longer a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. They are from yet another dimension or universe, apparently, and brought back by the first Time traveller. They have unlimited regenerations, and are therefore immortal, but have not succumbed to the ennui of, say, Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged. Go look it up.
The logical result of which could be an entire Universe populated by Doctors zipping back and forth through TIme. and no one else, eventually.
(The 12 regenerations and you die physically forever and your mind is put into the Matrix now only applies to Gallifrey-born Time Lords I presume.)
I appreciate you answering, I am more optimistic for the upcoming season but I can see your POV.

I just realized I haven't been back to this part of the boards since the Christmas special.
I really enjoyed it.
It was a great first solo episode for 15 and a nice introduction to Ruby Sunday. It also set up a couple more intriguing mysteries that I'm assuming will be a big part of the season's arc.
The goblins were pretty fun villains, and them going back to kidnap Ruby as a baby was a nice bit of playing around with time. I always loved that kind of stuff with RTD and Moffat, but it seemed like Chibnall, at least in his first season, which is all I've seen so far, didn't do nearly as much of it.
Definitely very curious to see who Ruby's mother is and who Mrs. Flood is, and if they tie into whoever took The Master tooth.

They make it up as they go along. They always have. Someone who'd only seen the Hartnell years would have no more idea what the Gallifrey/Time Lords/regenerations/Matrix stuff is about than they would about the Timeless Child stuff.

Watching live? How quaint.

Not quite. If you think it's must-see, then you're going to not dawdle for a week. Overnights are still important.

Plus, is a count ticked if someone tunes in for all 50+ minutes of it or if they tune in for 5 minutes then go wander off to see what the reality shows are doing?

Top 3 for the week and 2nd most watched on Christmas Day. And that's just the Live +7. Based on the previous Live +28s it will probably finish in second place for both. And worth pointing out the only thing beating it is not an a actual show but the broadcast of the New Year's Fireworks.

Edit: I see the right-wing CHUDS are now claiming the ratings numbers are being faked by the BBC (even though the BBC don't produce the numbers) to hide the truth about what a failure the episodes have been. You couldn't make it up.

FFS!

Shame Disney+ don't tend to release any numbers, be interesting to see how many watched the specials.
