The Doctor Who News Page is reporting that the Hartnell stories The Chase and The Space Museum will be coming to DVD soon:

I believe The Chase is the last complete Daleks story from the classic series that has yet to be released to DVD (unless they haven't done Resurrection of the Daleks yet). Of course whether WE get to see a complete version of The Chase is still up in the air. I'd heard the reason why it hadn't come out on DVD yet was because of a film clip of The Beatles performing Ticket to Ride used in the show had been clogging up the release rights. And unlike Remembrance of the Daleks which also had a Beatles recording in the background of a scene that was easily overdubbed by another piece of music for the DVD release, the Beatles clip in The Chase was actually a major part of a scene. So whether this means the BBC sorted things out or DVD viewers will be spared the sight of seeing Ian dancing the boogaloo (everyone say awwwwwww....) is still up in the air!

I believe the one of the restoration team (Steve Roberts, I think) posted that thanks to a new blanket agreement regarding archive productions with the music industry, the Beatles clip in The Chase was no longer a problem (in effect, it meant that if a piece had the correct clearances at the time, then it could be presumed to be cleared now). Whether that's only in the UK/EU, or worldwide, I don't know.

Boooo...stupid rights and disc regions.
Disc regions are really no problem to overcome (I mean, I own an easily-hacked DVD player for which I paid $40 at Best Buy), and besides, it's not like all the Doctor Who that doesn't star Paul McGann doesn't eventually show up on DVD in the States anyway...

Since Michael Jackson sold his Beatles collection rights, the Ticket to Ride clip is no longer an issue. Steve Roberts confirmed this last (?) year.

The Chase is the last black and white Dalek story to be released (sans the discovery of the long lost Power of the Daleks and Evil of the Daleks, or any more of The Daleks Master Plan). There is still Day of the Daleks and Death to the Daleks to come out. Otherwise every proper Dalek story has been released.

Am really glad to hear this. It's the last story I've been waiting for to complete my tiny collection.

EDIT: Sorry, actually I think it might've been Apple's licensing for the Beatles clip.

Who knows. Just hopefully it's on there!

Incidentally for folks upset over the regions, BBC Video have generally been really good in getting North American releases out within a few months of the UK release, and there's even been a few occasions where we've got releases before the UK has! They've done OK by me so far.

As for the licensing, I hope that's the case. I recently learned that the Beatles were really cool with selling Patrick McGoohan the rights to use All You Need is Love in the finale episode of The Prisoner, basically for a nominal fee (which is why there's never been a problem with DVD releases of that show, thank god), so I can't really imagine there being any outstanding issue with The Chase. Also, the piece of footage used comes from a TV appearance that has been wiped, so the DVD might score some extra sales from Beatles fanatics who want to see the rare clip.

Been looking forward to seeing The Chase for quite awhile now, even if it does have a reputation for being a bit cheesy.

I still have the VHS editions with the Beatles. Think I'll hold on to it, just in case...

Yeah, yeah, I know, it's just frustrating is all. I still don't understand the point of have region discs and players. This doesn't happen with CDs.

Agreed. I've never seen the point in region coding either.

As for "The Chase", looking forward to it. As for the licensing/use of Beatles songs... I'm still not clear on that. I'm waiting for the separate release of the special edition of "Remembrance of the Daleks" to hit R1 but I've read that the use of the Beatles songs is only for the UK version. And if that's the case, it's not really worth buying to me if I still don't get the proper, aired version.

Due to the worldwide implications ITC had the foresight to get such rights sorted out at the time. Along with filming it all in 35mm colour, it may have cost them more at the time but it clearly paid off in the long run!

I really like those two stories, especially The Chase. I didn't think they were cheesy.

The Chase holds the record of the largest number of onscreen bloopers for any Hartnell Serial.

I especially love the Aridian who stares at the camera then runs off.

Or the camera in the forest.

Actually I've never seen The Chase either. I just keep hearing about how awful it is from other fans.

I'm still looking forward to some Mechanoid goodness though.

I don't know how they did it, but I'm impressed with the technical wizardry the BBC showed with the CD release of "Evil of the Daleks" in being able to remove "Paperback Writer" from the mono audio track.

It's the same process that the Beatles themselves used to separate John Lennon's voice from "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love," come to think of it.

The Beatles have a long history with Doctor Who. Lennon apparently enjoyed the show, and he was photographed with Dalek props.

I'd love to hear Fitz Kreiner's collection of alt-universe Beatles albums. I wonder if he has God...
