The characters make me watch Voyager!

I watched the show originally for Be'Lanna. She was the first character from the start that captured my attention.

I also warmed up quickly to Tuvok and enjoyed the character even more than Spock.

Paris & the EMH were great due to their wise ass remarks all the time. Plus, I think Paris was interesting because he too me was the first Trek character that was Mr. Joe Average.

Janeway way found more appeal for me when Seven joined. The scenes with them together are priceless and I found their bond to be almost as strong as Sisko & Dax.

Neelix was annoyingly lovable, plus I get giddy joy at seeing his orange eyes. I'll give the make up and design guys credit. No matter how you feel about the character, I think he was one of the coolest looking aliens in Trek.

She was a backstabbing whore. It made me so angry when she extracted Chakotay's DNA and impregnated herself. Grrr. Bitch...filthy lying cheating whore. *coff*



What the hell happened to that bitch anyway? Maybe I oughta just keep watching to find out.

There is just something about the characters and their interactions on Voyager that keeps me enjoying the show. The plotting and episodes aren't exactly original, but I enjoy watching the people so much that I'll watch most any episode - even some of the really mediocre ones. The cast has a great chemistry and all the actors play their roles with wonderful conviction. And the characters, while somewhat broadly drawn, are just plain fun. ...<snip>... On Voyager, I tune in more to see Captain Janeway and her crew more than for whatever action-insert-of-the-week they've got!

Voyager’s great cast of characters makes this show worthwhile for me too. I took to some immediately, I warmed to all but one soon after.

By the end of the first season all but one character had become characters I cared about. I was more interested in them and their quite everyday business of learning to live well within a community of disparate personalities, traditions, needs, and histories than anything else.

Then, as you put it, the action-of-the-week, was often simply the plot device that gave me new sets or stories to enjoy them in as the writers expanded their personalities, backgrounds, abilities, interests, goals.

By the middle of the third season the one character hold out for me started being rewritten, and the new personality the writers created made that last hold out as dear to me as all the others were in their own way.

Strongly reminds me at times of the good ole' TOS with the trinity.

When I discovered Voyager I also found I connected it with the OriginalSeries. Though the trinity does not come to mind for me the ethics struggled with there, the moral conundrums, the philosophical discussions it prompted me to consider 'was' exactly how the OriginalSeries impacted my life. Plus the exploration of space, new life forms, new civilizations, going where we had never gone before brought me straight back to the thrill I had watching our original series.

Though I never watched Voyager (or the OriginalSeries) through rose colored lenses to make me oblivious to the shortcomings, it was and is how these shows speak to what I most value and what I most enjoy in Trek that turns their shortcomings into trivialities that are inconsequential to me. Much like a brother or sister I love and enjoy who always slams the screen door or doesn't put the clean dishes in the dishwasher away.

Since I discovered Voyager it has continued to give to me the things I most enjoy in Trek. It IS the cast of characters with their particular stories and personalities, played by these particular actors, that is the biggest thing that makes this series exceptionally worthwhile me.

Ro was recurring on TNG, and she had done a stint in a Federation prison for aiding the Maquis.
Voyager's cast was a lot more interesting than Enterprises's. That's not to say I didn't like some of ENT's cast, like T'Pol and Trip, but a lot of their cast like Merryweather and Hoshi faded into the background a lot.
Janeway, the Doctor, Kes and Seven are my favorite characters.

Janeway was the reason I became interested in Voyager but I soon grew to care about all the others as well. The friendships. The close-knit atmosphere among the crew greatly appealed to me. More so than the episodes themselves. I felt like I was watching a family.

I admit I am not a sci-fi fan. Far from it, actually. The genre never seemed interesting to me. Partly because I don't understand science and when you don't understand something, you don't enjoy it. Even now, all the science that is talked about on Voyager goes over my head.

But as stated above, Voyager was more than just about warp cores and phasers.

The characters, cast and the performances of the crew made Voyager what it is for me today. I love this show, it is one of my favorites of Trek or any other series. Seven of nine had her moments but to me I loved the pull of Paris and Torres.

You give me any sci-fi show, I'm beyond confused. In regards to Voyager, I now know that that big blue light in engineering is the warp core, right? And that's what gives the ship fuel. But what the heck does "evasive maneuvers" mean? Every time I hear that line I'm like "Huh?"

The only character I was ever interested in on Voyager during its entire 7 year run was Chakotay, and wished that more episodes were devoted to him. Chakotay was a very "Riker-esque" character. :thumbsup:

One more thing-don't try to get it. Just accept it as part of their world and your head will stop spinning.

Every now and then a technobabble is used in multiple contexts and you can figure its meaning. That's how I sometimes watch foreign films. After while I can figure it out some words.

I'm in on that count. Not a sci-fi person either.

Interestingly, I find some of the films I like (TV, movies) happen to 'be' sci-fi/fantasy but I never register them as such. To me they are just 'stories' with a setting in space or with robots or computers or some such.

(I seem to be watching more and more of them these days because I am fascinated with the new film cgi vfx technologies. It's like candy to me. "Mooorrrrrre, please.")

I'm still watching 15 years later for the characters.

That's true. It's difficult to get me to watch a new series, I give up on most of them after only one or two episodes, but I'll rewatch all of Trek every two or three years.

The characters and the premise for the show made me like Voyager imediately.

Most of all the characters. Voyager is together with NCIS the only show where I took an immediate liking to all the main characters while watching the pilot epiosode. I must admit that I did have some small doubts about The Doctor first but that changed soon, most notably in "Time And Again" where I started to really enjoy his sarcastic comments.

I also liked the fact that all the main characters were given their chance to shine in most of the episodes.

Obviously many people dislike Chakotay. But he is one of my favorites. Multi-faceted and of Native American decent. I can´t understand why some people don´t like him. Neelix, hmmm, sometimes he sucks. Harry Kim, the one and only Ensign. I don´t dislike any on-screen characters, not even Wesley Crusher. Only literature characters come to mind. And then I´m content with never reading about them again.

The problem is that at times it seemed to be overused. But the other Trek shows were also guilty of at times relying on Treknobabble.

Well, I did dislike Seven once, due to the fact that Kes was kicked out to make room for her and that those in charge made it look like the best thing ever done in any show. Later on I realized that I was wrong, taking out my frustration on the character, something I actually regret now.
I've re-watched a few season 4-7 episodes in recent time and find the character acceptable. But I still like the other characters more, maybe for nostalgical reasons.
As for Chakotay, he's number 2 on my favorite list.
