The boy Kirk passed in the Corvette

Apparentally, the emotional poignancy of George Sr's sacrifice would have been lessened if he were simply sacrificing his life for his newborn child as opposed to his firstborn child. Thus George Samuel Jr is erased from continuity. Or renamed Johnny. Or something.

It served no purpose to rename him Johnny in the new cut. He didn't even need to be there.

That whole scene didn't need to be there. It offered zero plot, and any characterization was offered up again later in the film--mostly in the bar scene.

I'm sure the "director's cut" will include Nero escaping from the Klingons and, perhaps, Kirk's scene with George.

Who's johnny, she said...

and smiled in her special way...

So, who exactly was that Johnny boy that young Kirk sped by in his dad's car? Was Johnny running away from home, because it looked that way to me. I only ask because maybe we will see this 'johnny' bloke in the next movie. He does seem older than Jim Kirk and they do seem like friends..

Well..anyway. I would like to see more of Johnny and maybe, knowing how JJ loves to bring back characters from the past (LOST), we will see Johnny again....

So..who's Johnny??

Re: Who's johnny, she said...

He was supposed to be kirk's brother. I doubt we'll see him again.

Re: Who's johnny, she said...

Yes, supposedly it was "Georgy" -- his brother.

But it works just as well as some neighbor kid.

Re: Who's johnny, she said...

That's a bothersome thing to me. They could have just left the kid's name out altogether and not had Jim yell at him -- just passed him up. It could have been left ambiguous, instead of removing George.

Re: Who's johnny, she said...

Personally, I'm curious about what became of the guy Kirk gave his motorcycle to.

Re: Who's johnny, she said...

I think that kid was his neighbor and life-long friend, Gary Mitchell.:guffaw:Now the fanboys can relax... he WAS in the movie! :rommie:

Re: Who's johnny, she said...

yeah, god only knows why they changed him from "George" to "Johnny".

Re: Who's johnny, she said...

"Johnny was an old navy buddy - and if you went through what we did you'd understand..."

this makes sense for filmmaking purposes. but then they should have taken it out of the novelization as well. it's stupid to have two different takes on a scene in the movie and the book.
