The Borg

Dryson

Commodore
Commodore
Telemetry established, chronometric particle field is stable at 100%, Delta Quadrant conduit is holding at 85%

Take us in.

In an instant, the most advanced time ship developed by Starfleet, enters the space time rift and is sent 100,000 years into the past of the Delta Quadrant, presumably the time that the Borg came into being.

Captain, we are settling into an orbit around the third planet, the location of the weak signal we tracked several weeks ago.

Alert all science stations, main power to all sensor arrays and pallets.

The planet is bombarded with every sensor type known to Starfleet at the time.

Send down Away-Teams.

Aye sir.

Research and personel shuttles of all types, pass through their hangar shields and make their way to pre-plotted landing and research sites.

Landing is underway, Captain.

Very well, inform me when the teams have discovered something.

Aye sir.

Exiting the bridge to his Ready Room, the captain takes a moment to delight in his favorite drink, Warm Sparkling Mango Water with a touch of lemon, before sitting down at his desk.

Taking another sip, he sets the cup on the desk and activates his Personal Log.

Captains Log
Stardate : Uknown, presumably 20,000 years in the past of the Delta Quadrant, 100 light years from Alpha Point.
Location : Third planet of a 12 planet solar system. DQPL-001 (Delta Quadrant, first planet that landfall was made on). This solar system, designated DQS-010 or Delta Quandrant Solar System number ten, ten being the tenth solar system investigated, is similar to the Sol system. Instead of asteroid rings around the larger gas giants, planets exist in orbit around the star, composition each planet, save for DQPL-001, are mostly rocky, have a breathable atmosphere for humanoid consumption some vegitatation and water. The composition of each planet suggests that each one was formed from the asteroids in orbit around each of the three gas giants. It is unknown whether or not the eight planets formed naturally or were built, artifically.

Several weeks ago, the ships sensors picked up a weak transmission signal, binary, coming from the DQS-010 region. After numerous lost signals and recalibrating the sensors, we were finally able to determine the originating location.

Initial sensor scans indicate an Earth like atmosphere but also a Borg like atmosphere. Some of the chief Borg scientists and theorists aboard seem to think that DQPL-001 is in a state of repair, nature resisting and countering what appears to be an attempt by the Borg to assimilate the planet. But if history is accurate, the Borg shouldnt even be alive, if thats what you call them, in this point in time.

Although Starfleet has never determined the location of the Borg homeworld, perhaps I can shed some light on their beginnings.

Before being assigned to this mission, I was given a heart monitoring device called a called an MCOT that monitors my heart beats. The chest device monitors each beat, then sends the data to a non-hackable smart phone monitor that then sends the data to the collection center.

In the Borg world, the very first piece of equipment installed in a new Drone would be a passive heart monitor. The PHM would monitor the heart rate during assimilation, and after assimilation, to ensure the implants were being installed correctly without killing the host. Which, I'm certain a lot of hosts did in fact die prior to the Borg, perfecting, their assimilation techniques.

If the Drone survived, the PHM, would constantly send heart beat data through a wireless ODN network, to a central monitoring facility. When an anomoly was detected, increased heart rate due to a threat, or a bad dream and even possibly the Drone trying to break free from the Collective, the facility would then direct Medical Drone Units, MDU's, to recalibrate the Drone's heart
New implants or nanotech would be used to repair the affected heart or to replace the Drone if the damage was severe enough and not able to be repaired.

Since the base of the design of the Borg is not perfection, but survivability of the original race, the creators of Borg tech must have been highly advanced in numerous medical fields who tried to save their species.

But save their species from what? An advanced virus or pathogen that was so destructive that numerous solar systems in the Delta Quadrant came together to combat the virus?

Slowly, each species in the Delta Quadrant could have become more Borg like, medical sensors and nanotech, used to fend off the virus made them more machine, like an accident kidney dialysis machine, that constantly purged their bodies of the virus. Most viruses and pathogens in the galaxy have been conquered but occasionally, a new one emerges, but is quickly conquered with advanced medications, which most recently have only been discovered inside the stream of time itself. Suggesting that a new enemy has emerged, from a new galaxy or possibly a new enemy that is bending time on itself to create new viruses that we can only find the cure to, in time itself.

Nearly 100,000 years in the past, we should be at the point in time when the Borg started to emerge. We are also in a time when most planets of the Federation are still emerging from the swamps or caves and have begun their exxodus to sentience. What remarkable data we could recover from their past...

A pip from the intercom draws the captain away from his thoughts to the bridge.

Report. He says walking through the doors to the bridge on his way to the captains chair.

The Stalwart, Cochise, Amerlite and Epsilon have entered the time conduit and will arrive at our location in 63 minutes.

Good, status of the Away Teams?

Most are still establishing base camps and should be ready within the hour.

It seems we have some time then. Deploy three probes per planet, one orbiting and two surface flyer probes. I want to know whats on those other planets.

Aye sir, deploying probes.

Over the next 60 minutes, twenty-seven probes are launched and enter the atmospheres of their intended planets. Data from each probe immediately begins to fill memory banks of the ship while the ships computers indexes and cross references the compiled data with historical records regarding the Borg. Every type of data that Starfleet has aquired of the Borg during fights and assilimation, even the footfalls of a Drone across a grassy lawn, the touch of the Borg on a piece of metal, weaves and laces its way through computer circuits trying to hack the central historical core of the Borg.

Captain, I am beginng to receive prelimary reports from the Away-Teams.

Anything of interest?

Some buried facilities, most likely medical facilities from the scans.

Any signs of life?

None, yet captain, but several teams have discovered large caverns undergound with vast quantities of calcium and metallic like deposits.

Calcium? Metallic like? Tell all Away-Teams to return to their base camps at once and remain there until further notice!

Unable to send or receive any comms from the Away-Teams, sir. Recalibrating sensors...

SIR! The Stalwart, Cochise, Amerlite and Epsilon, are, gone!

What do you mean, gone?

I was tracking their movement through the conduit and it suddenly collapsed.

When?

Send a Runner Class shuttle to the exact coordinates that the fleet was supposed to exit the conduit!

Aye sir.

And goto Red Alert!

The Red Alert klaxon blairs on all decks alerting the crew to a hostile environment.

I want every deck armed and ready to repell an assault!

Aye sir.

Captain, several shuttles are leaving the surface of DQPL-001and are heading away from the planet at high impulse.

Standard procedure for this type of Borg expedition. Any communication with them?

No not...captain, all of the shuttles that left the planet have gone to max warp.

That isnt standard procedure...where are they heading?

Calculating...deep space, unknown solar system 10 light years away.

Send three Runners after them, but keep their distance and no contact. Maintain comms on Starfleet Mycelial Network 129.

Aye sir.

Afloat in the Delta Quadrant 100,000 years in the past, orbiting a planet that has consumed over half of his ships 5,000 crew, four lost starships and Runners chasing down leads to what the Hell just happened, the captain stares out into space at the bright Earth like planet on the viewscreen.

Looking down at the MCOT monitor screen, his heartbeat is elevated, given the situation, is normal.

Should he leave, abandon those on the surface and time jump back to present day Starfleet and report what happened? Or does he stay and endanger the remaining 2,300 crew with families still aboard his starship? Times like these are the fire that test starship captains. Actions taken by a captain in such events, either ascend the captain to a legend or drown a captain in failure.

Captain, our sensors are picking up something on the planet below?

The Away-Teams?

No, the shuttles are sending back visual data along with data being transmitted prior to the comms black out.

What about the Away-Teams? Did they get the order to return to base camp and await further instructions?

According to shuttle logs from several Away-Teams camped around at the base of a mountain, here, the same teams that had discovered the large underground caverns with calcium and metallic deposits, the order was received.

Then where are they?

Uncertain captain.

Activate the audio distress beacon locators on all shuttles. Focus on the mountain camps first. Deploy the autodogs as well.

Aye sir.

A few seconds later, blue strobe lights on each of the shuttles pulse and wash away the darkness on the mountain side, then go dark and pulse again followed by a rythmic, loud trumpet sounding blast every 30 seconds. Auto dogs, metallic robots the size of Rotweillers, unfold from their storage locations and emerge from each of the shuttles, 75 in all.

Beacons and Auto Dogs deployed, sir.

Good, we gotta find the missing Away-Teams. Ill be in my Ready Room, secure from Red Alert to Orange Alert.

Aye,sir.
