Re: The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman) Grading & Discuss

You mean the bit at the end where they have a Torah and a Qur'an and other books on the shelf?
I guess spoiler rules don't apply to this thread:bolian:
It's a grading and discussion thread, I thought the general rule was that it was expected in these threads?
Ok then, very early we see the cross on the Book and that is how the villian finds out that the walker has the prize he had been seeking. As the walker and his young charge approach the last guard across the bay he goes as far to name the specific version of the Book he carries and by now the audience knows the walker had supernatural protection all along

When the librarian/publisher places the Book between the Torah and Qur'an in the library the Bible then reverts to just a book. Until that moment God and the hope for civilization being restored was represented by Christianity alone. Even at the end it appears as if Solara is going back out on a walk as an apostle as from what we have seen she is in no way equipped to survive out in the wilderness alone as the walker did for 30 years since the war.

Yes, but for some things there's just common decency.

I'm not a big religon person, but I really liked the message in this movie because, well, I believe in the Power of The Bible, unfortuantly I think more people in our world are like Carnegie and less like Eli/the curators of the Alkatraz Ark of Knowledge or whatever.

Re: The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman) Grading & Discuss

Is that the lead character out of the road being used as bait at the start of this film?

So you're fine talking about the Alcatraz Ark, but me mentioning the other books is too much?

Re: The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman) Grading & Discuss

My issue was on someone mentioning what the big reveal/surprise ending was. The Ark is all fine, but that reveal I think harms the ending of the movie a bit.

Mila Kunis is someone I never found attractive, I wanted to hurt her character on That 70s Show (Jackie?) so bad. But, she was good in this movie. And hot.

O give me a freekin break... I've not seen the movie... but If I did not want to know what the movie was all about... I would not have even bothered to see this thread... so stop your whining...

Look, I'm one of the last people to complain about spoilers, I think people are way too upity about them. But this thread is for grading of them too and some may come in here to see what others are saying about the movie, and -to me- certain plot details shouldn't be revealed. Would have the discussion thread for The Sixth Sense have openly discussed the surprising ending in that movie?

As far as I'm concerned, yeah, we can -and should- openly discuss the whole movie here but we should be more gaurded with that surprise ending. And, again, I'm not one who's at-all quick to cry about spoilers.

Back to the movie...

I may have to ammend my grade and bump it up a notch, on reflectiont his was a movie I really liked and had a decent message to it and Denzel is just awesome in pretty much anything he does. Oldman can be good but, again, in this movie I think he had the Oldman-ness Meter set to 11.

Re: The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman) Grading & Discuss

Spoilers for those who might have missed The Sixth Sense-ish plot point so crassly revealed by a previous poster.

I thought the film was excellent. I predicted many of the major story beats, but a lot of that was from playing the Fallout games, the universe of which this game could fit in with quite handily, short of pew-pew lasers and mutant beasties. Didn't mind that though, since I was caught off guard by his being blind. If I hadn't been so drawn into just watching the film, I probably would have been overanalyzing everything and picked up on it sooner. the clues are certainly present in retrospect.

Anyone catch the poster in the room Carnegie stashed Eli for the night? Paraphrasing purely from memory of the brief shot here: 2024 AD - with the tagline "a rather kinky r-rated tale of a man and his dog trying to survive the Apocalypse." Another Fallout-type reminder.

I'm not religious at all. Church is for funerals and weddings and baptisms and that's about it. Only read parts of the Bible for kicks, but I enjoyed the message of Eli, didn't think it was heavy-handed or propagandized. I can see people both turning away from and clinging to faith in that desolate wasteland. Fit with the story just fine.

Washington was great. Oldman was a right bastard. Kunis with her big dark eyes was both hot and non-annoying. And it had Titus Pullo! 13! 13!

Also got a strong Wizard of Oz vibe from some of the cinematography. The sky looked like the black and white sky of Kansas at times.

Anyway, good flick. I'd go see it in the theatres, if you're at all interested in it. I'll probably see it again and will definitely add it to my DVD collection.

They need to make a straight up Fallout movie one of these days.

(Attatched to Eli was the first trailer I'd seen for the Clash of the Titans remake and it looks frickin' awesome. It's God of War meets Ray Harryhausen classic. Can't wait!)

Re: The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman) Grading & Discuss

Yeah I would have liked not to have known the spoiler either. Although it is certainly something that you might guess. As to the Sixth Sense, come on, I guessed that was the ending before it even came out.

Are we talking about the blind spoiler or the fact they have other religious works? Because I guessed both before the happened.

Do realize to some of those bigoted against religion or specifically christianity, its very existence is heavy handed propaganda.

I haven't seen it yet, but how can it be a twist that he's blind? His name is ELI!
only we don't know he is Eli until a reveal late in the movie, he is simply a "walker" as opposed to the townies and everyone checks him out to make sure he hasn't turned cannibal. And the revelation that he is Eli has to be watched for, only this is not a great movie where your eyes are glued to the screen and you might miss it and still think the Book of Eli might be a Book of Brian.

Besides the fact he very well might not be Eli, who's to say it's his backpack?

Re: The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman) Grading & Discuss

Do realize to some of those bigoted against religion or specifically christianity, its very existence is heavy handed propaganda.

Such people's opinions are as meaningful as a KKK man's opinions on de-segregation laws.

People who're strongly, vehemently, opposed to religion are just as bad as those they're against.

I've flipped through The Bible some, I'm meaning to read my paraphrased version of it I have, I've some Belief, but other than that I woudln't call myself religous. I don't attend Church, though I may if I had more time to.

I respect that people believe in different things, including atheists, but if you're so commited to your cause that you close your eyes to any other way of thinking to the point of screaming about every, single, little thing that supports a way of thinking then I have no use to you. And this goes for the strongly religious too.

This movie, yeah, has a heavy "message" in it about God, The Bible, and Religion but you know what? SO what? If one doesn't like it that is their problem and they shouldn't criticize this movie for having such a message. It's dumb and ignorant to criticize a movie for delivering its message just because its message happens to be one you do not agree with.

Further, though the movie's trailers don't advertise it as one, the symbolism, tag lines, and heck the very name of the movie all point the suggestion of what the underline themes of the movie was going to be. (The trailer people really dropped the ball on this movie) So one hasn't themselves to blame for not liking this movie for having religious themes in it.

More people just need to shrug off things like this as in the real world for the vast majority of the population of this planet there's Belief in some form of deity or interpetation of a religious text. So, yeah, people are going to like movies like this as religion is a driving force on this planet.

The message in this movie, ironicaly, infact couldn't be more of one for those who would criticize and blast this movie for its message. Oldman's character wanted The Bible for Its power and influence. He wanted to use It to control people's motivations and thoughts. People who're strong in their belief to the point of criticizing people, other faiths, and thumping The Bible and shouting Its word and using that to demand the way things should be are just as bad as Carneige was. They want to use The Bible to scare, empower, and control.

Eli is far more simple and open minded. He sees the power in The Bible and, instead, wants to use Its power to inspire people, give them Faith, and guide them which he believes the motivations of the people at the "Alcatraz Ark" are for, and from the other books on the shelf there (the Torah, the Qua'ran) they also intend to give people a choice in what to follow, Carneige's interests seemd to only lie in what he felt was THE word. He wanted to use The Bible as a weapon. Eli and the Ark wanted to use It as a tool to shape society, what It was meant for.

Even so, other than that, it's about as close to a Fallout movie as we're gonna get without it actually being a Fallout movie.

I liked the scene in the house when the old woman proclaims, "I know what the fuck I'm gonna be doing!"
