the "Bond" song

What do you consider the best Bond song of all time...bar none...it is the Bond song that all others are measured against...(Hmmm, why do I think a former Beatle may win this)

And then...list your next two favorite Bond songs...so, duh, what are your three favorite Bond songs of all time...here are mine...

Live and Let Die...this is the best Bond song. Its the one people think of the most when they think of Bond...

The Spy Who Loved Me...it won the academy award for best song from a movie. I think it really fits that movie well.

Tomorrow Never Dies...yep. I liked this Brosnan Bond movie (his best IMO) and I loved this song by Sherly Crow. Again, it fit the movie really good...

honorable mentions; the songs For Your Eyes Only (my favorite Moore Bond movie by the way) and License To kill.

By your own criteria, "the Bond song that all others are measured against", is "Goldfinger". "From Russia With Love" set the tone but "Goldfinger" expanded upon it with the iconic brass section and lyrics that may be a bout the villain but also may be about Bond.

"Tomorrow Never Dies" in comparison is OK but its main weakness is that if you listen closely it resembles the theme to the late '80s "Perry Mason" TV movie theme!!!!

"Diamonds are Forever" - Less cheesy lyrics than GOLDFINGER, but still a bit of camp there. (THUNDERBALL may be the cheesiest of them all)

"Live and Let Die" is good, too.

"The Living Daylights" by Ah-Ha was underrated.

After Dalton's first movie, they kinda turn to shit, seem generic or were performed by the wrong artist.

Certainly, Goldfinger has hit an icon status that none of the other songs have quite been able to reach. (Although, when I think of "Goldfinger," I tend to think of the scene from Frasier where Frasier, Niles, & Martin are in a bar and want to drown their sorrows and sing "Accentuate the Positives." Unfortunately, the usual piano guy doesn't get in for another hour and the only thing the current guy knows how to play is "Goldfinger.")

As for personal favorites, I like "Live & Let Die," "The Living Daylights," "Goldeneye," "Tomorrow Never Dies," "Surrender" (the alternate Tomorrow Never Dies theme), "The World Is Not Enough" (I'm on a big Garbage kick right now), and "You Know My Name."

OK, sorry, I didn't answer the question properly...

My actual three favourite Bond songs are:

1) "Thunderball" - it's a bit more dark and brooding than "Goldfinger". (It's the male version). The combination of the lyrics and Tom Jones' voice make this sound like Bond's own song. Check out the last note that Tom hits!!!

2) "Goldfinger" - as I said in my previous reply, this is the one that set the standard for Bond songs, which also means its been the subject of more parodies than any other. Actually it's difficult to choose between this an "Thunderball".

3) "Live And Let Die" - listen to this when you are driving!!! It starts quite calmly and then suddenly...brass section, rolling drums...and you're in a car chase!!! - Please drive carefully!! McCartney captures the rollercoaster ride of a Bond movie.

I have to give a special mention to "We Have All The Time In The World" - sure it's played in the middle of the dodgy 'musical interlude' in "OHMSS" (at least it's not "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"!!!!!). This is probably the one Bond song that you can listen to and not automatically think "Bond". It's just a fantastic love song and in the context of Bond it's a tragic one. Plus it' is, sadly, Louis Armstrong's swansong.

"Goldfinger" is certainly iconic, but it looks like some people have built it up too much in their minds. I wouldn't say that nothing else can compare because I think we've had a lot of great stuff that has been just as good at capturing the sound and spirit of Bond. I think that the Brosnan movie themes did just that for modern Bond.

My all time favorite Bond song is probably "We Have All Time In The World" from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I had that song on my reception CD for my wedding. Also, the main theme for On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of my favorites and when I play it in my car it makes me want to speed....I have to be careful.

My second favorite Bond song would have to be "For Your Eyes Only" mainly due for enjoying Sheena Easton in the 80's and loving the song before I was even a Bond fan.

My third favorite Bond song is "The World Is Not Enough" by Garbage.

I recently bought the new edition of The Best of Bond...James Bond and was thrilled that "You Know My Name" was finally included on a James Bond cd as it was not on the Casino Royale soundtrack. Also, the tracks are in chronological order which makes it like an evolution of the Bond themes.

Tomorrow Never Dies...yep. I liked this Brosnan Bond movie (his best IMO) and I loved this song by Sherly Crow. Again, it fit the movie really good...

It's a goddamn crime that Sheryl Crow's piece of shit was chosen over k.d. lang's perfect and sublime "Surrender," one of the best Bond songs ever.

Other than the theme song itself, I'd go with Goldfinger. It's just so different from anything, almost sounds like it shouldn't work yet is somehow just right.

I conccur, and its made even worst by the fact that Arnold's score for the film takes its cues from KD not Sheryl. Best Bond song we never had.

My top three...

OHMSS: Ok not a song but it plays over the opening titles and is fantastic!

Live and Let Die

A View to a Kill/You know my Name (joint third cos I wanted to get them both in)

I sure don't like the new one, "Another Way to Die" by Paul White and Alicia Keys. It's downright grating.

I'd go with "Goldfinger" and "Live and Let Die", but I like most of them until they hit the 1990's.

Diamonds are Forever. I'm not sure why for me, it's the definitive Bond theme. It might be because it's talking about diamonds, which are expensive, and Bond is nothing if not about excess and riches. Shirley Bassey sings it. In the 70s and early 80s she kind of epitomised all the things that Bond of that era was about - glamour, excess, sophistication etc.
