Spoilers The Blacklist - Season 5 Discussion Thread

^ This past episode would've greatly benefited from that. Things would pick up speed when Red's storyline came up and then come to a screeching halt whenever the Fucking Bunch of Idiots showed up. All the FBI, including Liz, could disappear completely (well, maybe not Aram; he's actually useful) and the show would be far better for it.

I hope they aren't yanking our chains with the foreshadowing comments and such about killing Tom.

Still sitting on the fence about continuing to watch this show, I found the last one to be pretty dang good--the carny couple has at least infused a bit of newness into the show, and building Red's empire from the ground up again is a welcome plot development. I could so do without the Tom shhh suitcase dynamic, because it's only fodder for those sweeps week episodes, and not nearly as compelling after 3-4 times through essentially the same secret "reveals".

Wouldn't it be funny if in the end, Aram decided to leave the FBI to become part of Red's rebuilt empire?

As for the suitcase, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I don't think that's the remains of Katarina. I think that some stunt was pulled by Red in the past to allow her to escape from her life with Constantine and that her death was faked to allow her to assume a new identity, likely the poor unfortunate in the suitcase. In support of this theory, I offer this: When Constantine was about to kill Red last season, Red whispered something to him that changed his mind. I said right there to my wife that Katarina was alive, as it was the only thing that Red could've have said that would've caused Constantine to let him go.

The preview for the next episode which says Liz loses someone close to her is misleading. Obviously it won't be anyone on the task force. She'll just discover the murder from last week's episode.

Predictable, yet effective episode--could The Blacklist be experiencing a revival of sorts? It actually moved the suitcase plot along fairly effectively and combined 3 story lines fairly cohesively.

Well the show's certainly lightened up. I wonder if it was the move to 8 p.m.

They've decided to be mostly comedic with low budget Red putting his empire back together.

And there goes the second main character off the show during its entire run, although this one obviously hits harder than Agent Malik.

Hey, the lost dog hurts more than Tom's departure. Maybe some more of the dull side can take a hit. Ressler, yeah, him next.

Still, this show has tightened it up and created a new, effective villain. Resurgent may be too strong a word, but refreshing.

Pretty brutal scenes before the Tom take-out but the whole "waking from a coma a year later" is right out the soap opera playbook.

I was kinda hoping they would both die. It would make the show a lot more interesting.

Well if you're not a Liz fan, you may not like an episode that's almost entirely her.

The last ten minutes or so were fine but it was a slog going through the character building. They keep bringing up Liz having a dark side but every time they show it the series retreats from it faster than one of Niven's Puppeteers. I hope they'll go with it for more than an episode.

I'm surprised that Red has not found and killed the people who assaulted Liz and Tom after all these months. He certainly has the resources to find them and we know how determined he can get when he wants something. It also would help Red to get rid of those people so he can hide away the whole bones in the suitcase ordeal.

He got the 'patriot' that attacked Liz fast enough. No doubt going after them will take up the rest of the season. I expect he will be going after them and he and Liz's trajectory will clash over him trying to keep her from knowledge of the suitcase.

Yeah, since the suitcase is what started this whole mess, I greatly suspect that when Liz learns about it and whatever secret Red is hiding from her.... She's not going to be a happy camper.
