The Best TOS you can think of...

Manisphere

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Naturally, lately talk has turned to the Thyphon Pact, all matters of post Destiny fallout and the oncoming nuTrek lit. There is a lot of emotional realism in the new books and I always found that TNG and DS9 dealt more with relationships in their episodes than TOS ever did. TOS seemed to more often than not be about some crazy bigger than life science based story.

Now, I always hear Prime Directive and Ex Machina thrown in the list of best TOS novels but I haven't heard many others lately.

What are some of the strongest TOS books?

Crucible Trilogy - especially McCoy and Spock
the 2 Yesterday books
Sarek
Vulcan's "Noun"-series
The Entropy Effect
Ishmael
...

The Crucible-Trilogy (Shame on those responsible for cancelling of the Hardback-Omnibus)

Constellations, the 40th-Anniversary-Anthology

Ex Machina

Burning Dreams

Excelsior - Forged in Fire

Federation

Prime Directive

The Khan - Trilogy

and of course the Entire Vanguard-series

Spock's World

Ex Machina

Prime Directive

Federation

Crucible Trilogy

Vulcan's Heart

Final Frontier (not the movie novelization, but the Diane Carey novel)

First Frontier

Doctor's Orders

Eugenics Wars duology (I don't cosider to Reign in Hell as the 3rd part of a trilogy.. I also think it's not as good as the "original dulogy" ;))

Rihannsu trilogy. All of Diane Duane's stuff really

Odyssey

Vulcan's Heart

Abode of Life

Final Reflection

The IDIC Epidemic

Rihannsu,
IDIC Epidemic,
Crucible Trilogy,
Music of the Spheres,
Burning Dreams,

The Rihannsu Saga is a Pentalogy, not a trillogy,
and Vanguard is a set in the same time frame as TOS but is not the same series.

The Rihannsu Saga is a Pentalogy, not a trillogy,

More of a tetralogy, really, since Swordhunt/Honor Blade was actually a single book published in two volumes, and its rerelease in The Bloodwing Voyages restores it to single-book form.

However, the complete Duane series should include The Wounded Sky and Spock's World as well. They're not Rihannsu-focused, but they introduce characters and ideas that figure in the Rihannsu books.

Original I was going to use the word "epic", but thought that sounded a little melodramatic.

No, but the cancellation of the Crucible omnibus had nothing to do with Ellison(TM) and everything to do with the crappy environment for publishing that led to Pocket dismissing two editors in the past year.

Yes, of course. But when someone is ranting and raving and waving lawsuit papers, and you have to drop one expensive item from your schedule due to economics, maybe it makes sense to drop the one causing the most antagonism?

Of course, others would say "Publish or be damned" and then count on Harlan for some extra publicity and increased interest/sales. His rantings probably increased sales of the paperback "Crucible" trilogy in the first place.

My favorites are The Kobayashi Maru, The Romulan Way, Cruicible: McCoy - Provenance of Shadows, Federation, and, if they count, the first three Vanguard books.

Crucible Trilogy - especially McCoy and Spock
the 2 Yesterday books
Sarek
Vulcan's "Noun"-series
The Entropy Effect
Ishmael
...

All great. Also "Uhura's Song", "Strangers From the Sky", "In the Name of Honor" and "Ex Machina", although those last two are set in the TOS movie era.

My favorite TOS stuff is:
Ex Machina
Burning Dreams (Captain Pike book)
The Captain's Daughter
Spock's World
Best Destiny
Vulcan's Soul trilogy

The Pandora Principle by Carolyn Clowes, The Wounded Sky by Diane Dune also her rihannsu series Spock's world.Doctor's Orders The Vulcan soul series and Final Frontier by Diane Carey.Yesterday's son and time for Yesterday, Sarek by A.c. Crispin.Corona by Greg Bear. The 3 TOS book trilogy by Micheal Jan Friedman. The case of the Colonist's corpse.Uhura's song.

I agree with many here, but I was surprisingly underwhelmed by Prime Directive. I thought the ending was disappointing. I generally agree with all the glowing reviews, but thsi one was meh for me.

In no perticular order:

My Enemy, My Ally
Crossroad
Ishmael
Final Frontier (not the film)
Dreadnought!
The Kobayashi Maru (not the Enterprise one)
Prime Directive

...and loads more i'll probably remember in an hour or two.

(those are only my all-time faves. There are dozens more I'd class as "good")

I feel the same way about Prime Directive. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent book, but I just don't see what's so great about it.

The Entropy Effect
Yesterday's Son
The Final Reflection
Dreams of the Raven
Double, Double
The Cry of the Onlies
The Lost Years
Twilight's End
Anything by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens
