Hmmm, not sure about this. Personally, I felt that Red Dwarf started losing it's way after Series 6. I haven't even seen Series 10!

All seasons are good, but 3-5 are my favorite ones, followed by 1-2, then X, then 6-8 then BTE.

I recently re-watched all the episodes from the original run, skipping the new stuff since I didn't care for it enough to re-watch.
Season one was surprisingly weak -- I had forgotten about that.
Mid season two is when it really started to pick up and find it's way.
Season three to five is when it was on fire.
Season six, less so, but still great fun nonetheless.
Season seven was a surprisingly drastic turn for the worst. I have no idea what happened there but somethign was clearly smegged up behind the scenes.
Then season eight brought it back to season six levels and had a hell of a cliff hanger ending, which we never saw the resolution of. Plus, we missed a shit load of stories, since "Back to Earth" stated after the opening theme it was nine years later.
Some much left unresolved and untold. Just take Rimmer alone: we have no idea what became of the original Rimmer who took off as the new Ace Rimmer. We have no idea what happened to the new nano-bot built Rimmer season eight gave us, and we have no idea what Rimmer we have in BtE and beyond.

3 things:
First, I think Doug Naylor was still finding his sea legs as the solo show-runner after the departure of Rob Grant. (In retrospect, while Series VIII was an improvement over Series VII, I'd say Naylor didn't totally figure it out until Series X.)
Second, Series VII didn't have a studio audience. That really throws off the performers and their timing.
Third, the departure of Rimmer was a critical blow to the show's comedic structure. So much of the show's comedy was built around his antagonistic relationship with the rest of the crew. As a replacement for that source of friction, Kochanski was better than nothing but not nearly as dysfunctional as the rest of them, and thus not as funny. Especially in Series VII, Kochanski was stuck in the thankless role of the curt, humorless straight-man. (They did a slightly better job at inventing some fussbudget neuroses for her in Series VIII but they were still fairly minor.)
